36. Will there ever be peace?

Kaitlyn
"Are you scared?"
"Scared is too mild a word. I'm terrified."
"She's your mother. It won't be that bad."
"It will be that bad."
"You have me. If it's too much, lean on me." I smiled up at my husband. Three beautiful months with this gorgeous man all to myself was more than I bargained for. "Does she know we're coming?"
"I'm not sure."
"Well let's get this over with."

"Oh Kaitlyn-Rose. What have you done?" We were greeted by Safiare and Jax on the way in. "You look stunning by the way. And you're glowing. You even put some weight on. Are you pregnant?"
"No Saf. I'm not pregnant. Leave it to you to think that."
"Well, welcome back. You've been missed."
"I'm sure I have," I said dryly.
"Did he buy you a ring yet?" I held up my left hand proudly. "Nice. Now that you're back we can finally get married. Thanks for beating us to it by the way."
I'm sorry. We just couldn't wait."
"I can tell."

"So, when is the big day," I asked changing the topic.
"In a week."
"A week! I thought it would have been at least a few months. What if we hadn't come back?"
"I've waited four years. I'm not waiting anymore. I need to tie him to me indefinitely." We all laughed except Jax. But I knew deep down he was smiling, secretly pleased with himself.

"So you two finally decided to return."
"We brought you gifts."
"Several gifts," Phoenix chipped in.
"Have you eaten?"
"Huh?"
"Did you eat?" Phoenix and I exchanged a look. She's being too nice.
"No. We didn't have time to eat."
"Dinner will be ready in a few minutes." What's going on? I thought she would have been pissed.

"You're worried aren't you?"
"I'm confused."
"I can see you two whispering."
"Mum, you don't seem upset at all."
"Upset? Why would I be upset? My only daughter runs off and gets married. It happens. I did the same thing. Although at the time it was for a different reason. I've decided to let it go. Enough time has passed. This year I'll be spreading love, not hate. I won't carry grudges or hold in anything anymore." Who is this woman and what has she done to my mother? Something was definitely going on here. "Where's daddy?"
"Your father will be here." Why did she sound like that?

We sat down to eat once daddy arrived. There was tension in the air. "What's going on? Are you fighting?"
"Fighting would mean an actual exchange of words, which as you can see is not happening. Your mother thinks the silent treatment is going to solve this issue." So they are fighting. "What issue?" There wasn't a response. "Mum?" She remained silent. "Daddy?" His mouth stayed shut. "Jax?" He was fighting not to say anything, but he eventually cracked. "Some woman came forward saying she had a child for father some years ago."
"What? What woman?"
"I don't know the details, Kait. As you can see, they've been tight-lipped about it."

"I see I won't be having the quiet dinner I had anticipated." Mum excused herself from the table. My father sighed and dropped his head in his palms. It seemed like he had aged since the last time I saw him.

"Daddy?" He was hurting. I could see it. I didn't believe this fictitious story one bit. "Daddy." I walked to his side. "Let's talk." We walked to his study and he took a seat. "How long has this been going on?"
"From around the time you left."
"So for three you months you two have been like this? Is there any possibility it could be true?"
"Kaitlyn."
"I'm just asking."
"No. I've told your mother this. I slept with that woman before I even met her. I have been careful every time. I only have two children and that's you and your brother."
"Why don't you just do a paternity test?"
"Why should I? She should trust me! She should trust in the man she married. We've been together for twenty-seven years. What else do I have to do to prove myself to her?"
"You're both so stubborn. A simple test could put this all to bed, but instead you're fighting."
"I shouldn't have to take some stupid test to prove that child isn't mine. She should know that. She didn't believe me with Andrea and it's clear she doesn't believe me now."
"You're not being fair."
"Neither is your mother."
