24. An apology and a promise

Marc
My past sins have really caught up to me. The one time I was being completely honest is the time she chose to give up on me. I threw back another shot trying to come up with a way to fix this. Safiare had left the apartment. No matter what I did before, she never left. She'd give me the silent treatment or withhold sex, but she never leaves. Because she doesn't like being alone, and I know she doesn't like being alone. That's one of her greatest fears, to end up alone.

"Look who it is. If it isn't the great Marc Paxton."
"That's Marc Paxton Jr., you asshole."
"What crawled up your butt?"
"Long story. What are you doing here, Walter?"
"This is my spot. I thought you knew that."
"Whatever."
"You've been drinking a while. Don't you think it's time you stopped?"

"Safiare left me." Walter started laughing uncontrollably. "I fail to share in your amusement. It's serious. She moved out."
"It's about time that gorgeous blonde of yours finally wised up and left your undeserving cheating ass."
"I thought you were my friend?"
"I am, but you can't blame her. You've put her through so much. I'm actually shocked it took her so long. Look on the bright side. You finally got what you've always wanted. She left on her own. Your parents can't blame you for that."

"I don't want her to leave," I surprised myself by saying. "What?"
"I love her."
"Eh? How many of these shots did you really take? Are you drunk?"
"I said I love her. I'm in love with her if I'm to be honest."
"Well shit." He took a shot himself. "This chick Kaci I used to mess with is causing problems."
"Did you explain that to wifey."
"I tried."
"But you've fucked up too many times already so she doesn't believe you."
"Her heart doesn't want to believe me even her head is telling her that she should."

"You sound like a girl. Man the fuck up. If you want her back, go work your ass off to get her back. You should come on my radio program."
"No way."
"Why not? Women love grand gestures. I'm sure Safiare is no different. Come expose your feelings to her and the rest of New York. She just might take you back."
"I'll think about it."
"Just let me know anytime. I'll always have a spot open for you."

I needed to do something. If I didn't I could possibly lose her for good. I don't know why I continued to do all that stuff. In the beginning it was to drive her away, but the more I did the closer she stuck to me. It was because of that why I used to purposefully flirt with women to get a reaction out of her. When she was gone I'd miss her so much I'd try to find a replacement for her. I know it isn't an excuse for what I've put her through, but that's what I've been telling myself to feel better. I'm not good with feelings. I don't know how to show that I care. I always end up doing the opposite.

I sighed and took another shot. It doesn't matter what I want at this point. It's about what Saf wants. I wouldn't do this for myself. I'd do it for her. "Okay, I'll do it. Just don't embarrass me or anything."
"Coming on the programme is embarrassing enough. Why do you think they call it exposed?" He chuckled and left me there alone with my thoughts once again.

"What the hell did you do to Safiare? The poor girl has been crying nonstop since she got here." My heart clenched at the fact that I was causing her pain. "What did you do Marc?"
"Mum, it's a misunderstanding."
"Don't give me that bullshit! She isn't saying a word. Whatever it is she's keeping her mouth shut about it and still being loyal to you. You did something." I sighed. "Turn on the radio to 93.4. Make sure Safiare is listening, too."
"What nonsense are you saying?"
"Mum, please? I'll explain everything after. Just get Saf to listen."
"I hope you know the only reason I will do what you ask is because you sound like a desperate fool right now." I'd take whatever I could get. "Thanks mum."
