38. He's gone...

Kaitlyn
"Mrs. Maddox, we should go." A blanket was wrapped around me and I was helped to my feet. I was so cold. I wanted to argue but I couldn't. There were only tears. They wouldn't stop. What was I to do now? How am I to go on? My reason for living is gone. He's gone and he's never coming back. He promised me we would grow old together. He promised me a long life before God and man. But he broke his promise. He left me here all alone. What am I lying to do?

Another sob left my lips.

I didn't know for how long I cried, but eventually I wore myself out and drifted off to sleep.

I woke up to shouting around me. It took a while for the fog to clear from my brain and I was reminded of all that has happened. I squeezed my eyes shut to keep the tears from flowing. My face felt swollen and my throat raw. I just wanted to go back to sleep and forget any of this ever happened. But I couldn't. I needed to decide what to now.

Reluctantly I got up and cleared my throat to get their attention.

"Excuse me." Bayar and another man looked at me. Bayar looked nervous. The other man looked pissed. But they looked similar, same hazel eyes and same hair colour. The stranger looked younger.

"Mrs. Maddox."

"Kaitlyn please." I didn't want to feel any more pain by thinking about Phoenix's unjust death.

"Where am I?" The stranger looked at me but didn't say anything.

"He's my brother, Cafar. We're in his home.

"Why are we here?"

"The situation has become a little difficult. My men and I need to go underground for a few days. I can't take you with me. It's not a place for women."

"I see. Is it because of the attack on the rebel camp?"

"That's part of it. I need you to stay here for a few days. You be safe. He's trustworthy, although somewhat ill-mannered." They exchanged a few more words. I couldn't understand a thing. "As soon as things die down I'll come and get you. You can go back then."

"I'm not going back."

"I beg your pardon?"

"I'm not going back. I'm never going back."

"Mrs. Maddox, I have to send you back. That is part of the deal I made with Mr. Accosi."

"Mr. Accosi isn't here. I am. I'm not going back. I don't want to go back. There's nothing to go back to. There is no life without my husband."

"She obviously isn't thinking straight, Bayar. She can stay here until you resurface. That's all I can promise. Send her back to wherever she came from when you do."

"I said I'm not going back. There's nothing to go back to. I have nothing to go back to." A sob escaped from my lips.

"Go back to your family."

"Phoenix was my family." Tears started to flow again. "Without him I'm nothing." They started speaking to each other again ignoring me. I wiped my tears. This is the decision I've made. I'm not going back. I'll never go back. I'll start a new life here. I'll try to live because that's what Phoenix would have wanted me to do. "I'm not going back," I repeated.

"We'll discuss it when I get back."

"Let's discuss it now," I shouted. "I can't go back. Don't you understand?"

"Who's going to take responsibility for you?" That was his brother. He seemed annoyed.

"I can take responsibility for myself."
