“Where are we going?” I asked through laughing as we ran down the dark main street.
“To dinner. Like I said earlier!” he laughed over his shoulder as he took off in a sprint.
I just shook my head and ran to catch up with him. As I rounded the corner that he had turned seconds before, I nearly collided into a body. Thankfully, I was quick on my feet and was able to stop myself just before I crashed into them.
The person ended up being Nathan and he just smiled widely at me before grabbing my hand and pulling me into the restaurant that we were standing in front of. I didn’t see what kind of place it was until we walked in.
It was a small family owned pizzeria. As we walked in, I could smell the fresh dough and fresh mozzarella from the kitchen. I closed my eyes once we sat down as I breathed in the homey aromas that were encircling me. When I opened my eyes, I saw Nathan looking at me with a smirk.
“Feels like home?” he asked.
My jaw just dropped. I had never told him about my Italian side. I never told him about how whenever I went to my grandparents, the scent of delicious homemade Italian food encased me.
“Tori told me about how much you loved your homemade Italian food from your Nan.”
“But how did you know I was Italian?” I asked tilting my head to the side with a smile etched on my face.
“Love, it wasn’t that hard. You talk with your hands constantly and you tan on a cloudy day. No wee Highlander can do that.” he said smirking again.
Alright, how did he know I was Scottish? I mean, I look more Italian than Scottish.
“How…?” I tried to ask as my eyes bugged out of my head.
“Your auburn was showing.” he whispered as he leaned in closer from across the table. “No Italian I’ve ever seen has ginger hair.”
I just covered my face and giggled like a little school girl.
“But your father told me about you. I asked what your heritage was and he told me Scottish and Italian. At least I figured out why I smile so much around you.” he explained grinning.
“Because Scottish girls always seem to put a smile on your face.” I said quoting the flip when they went to Glasgow for the Girl Guide gig.
We both just started laughing and eventually quieted down when the waitress came out and took our orders. I got pizza while Nathan, being himself, ordered the spaghetti bolognese.
We were just talking the whole time and after a bit Nathan asked me about my heritage. I started explaining everything to him. From my huge, quiet Scottish side to my small, rambunctious Italian side. After a bit I paused and noticed him staring more at my hands than my eyes.
“Nath?”
“Huh?” he said snapping out of his trance.
“What were you doing?”
“It’s cute when you talk with your hands. You get really into it.” he chuckled.
I felt a blush creeping onto my cheeks as the waitress came with our food. We thanked her and kept talking again.
During a moment when we were both eating, I heard someone speaking Italian from the kitchen. I listened for a second and if my two years of Italian serve me right, our waitress called for her mother to come over for a moment.
Out of the corner of my eye I could see our waitress and what I supposed was her mother along with about four other waitresses watching us from the serving window. They were a murmuring in Italian but I could tell they were talking about how cute of a couple we were.
“They all think we’re cute together.” I said smiling as I took a bite of pizza.
“What?” Nathan asked clueless to what was going on.
“Our waitress and what I suppose is her family think we make a sweet couple.”
“How do you know that?” he asked clearly confused at how I got this information.
“I can hear them talking in Italian. One just asked if we were engaged!” I said quietly as I kept listening.
He just snickered to himself as we both finished our dinner.
We walked out holding hands and went back down the main street towards the bus. By the time we got on board it was close to one in the morning and we were both too tired to do anything but go to sleep. Neither of us bothered to change so we climbed into a top bunk and fell asleep together. Nath on the outside with me curled up against him and his arm around my shoulders holding me close.
