Armin was never one to believe in silly notions like destiny, fate or love at first sight. It just never seemed logical or even remotely possible, but he liked to think he was an open minded man. Not usually one to shy away from admitting he was wrong, even if his pride suffered. Right now, he couldn't ever recall being more wrong about anything else in his life. The reality of the situation had crashed down on him in almost a brutally harsh manner and the moment would forever be engrained into his mind, body and soul forever. How could it not?
The sun beating down on the group was almost unbearably hot, and their only reprieve was the occasional breeze or stray cloud that would provide a brief amount of shade. Still, the small group of friends waited outside the Science Building for Eren. Much to his dismay (judging solely by the amount of times Eren complained about his lack of friends in the class) only Eren was taking Abnormal Psychology this semester. Though his lack of enthusiasm for the subject never stopped him from being late to meet up with them for lunch on Tuesdays and Thursdays. He always claimed it was the Professor that always kept him late, but Armin always had the suspicion that wasn't always the case. It certainly didn't appear to be the case that day at least. Eren had come waltzing towards them like always, but he barely paid them any mind as he chatted away with- Well Armin didn't know the woman accompanying his friend, but he had an immediate urge to rectify that. She was so perfect and as absolutely insane as he knew it was his heart skipped a beat when he heard a faint laughter coming from her as a result of something Eren has said. Armin was doing his best to take in every single thing he could about her, the closer she got the easier it became, and Armin could only find one single flaw on the woman: Eren's hand on her back as he led her to them. "Hey, sorry I'm late. Professor Hange gets waayy to into this shit. Oh! I told (Y/N) she could tag along with us for lunch."
Armin could hear Jean and Connie scoff ever so softly; mostly likely due to Eren breaking the no new flings being invited randomly rule that only existed because of Eren honestly. Armin could attest it was always a bit uncomfortable to try and navigate the awkward small talk, but this time he didn't think it was possible to care any less than he did. Instead he threw on a smile and offered his hand to her, "Armin. It's very nice to meet you."
She shook his hand and returned the friendly gesture. She couldn't recall the last time someone shook her hand as a greeting instead a curt wave, but she didn't mind it. "Likewise... but I told Eren I'm not crashing your lunch. I'm sure you guys don't want to deal with some random person while you're trying to eat."
Under normal circumstances she wouldn't be wrong. Usually that would be the cue for someone to take one for the team and casually mention they'd have to all get together another time, both parties knowing it would never happen. Armin was rarely the one to do so. Jean or Mikasa usually stepped up, neither one of them seemed to mind the formalities with strangers. The idea of parting ways so soon made Armin feel sick to his stomach and gave him the push to speak quickly enough that he beat them both to the punch. "Are you sure? We really don't mind, any friend of Eren's is a friend of ours."
Jean rolled his eyes at the blonde. Maybe Eren was paying him to be his wingman or something. That was the only way he'd want to sit through lunch and listen to Eren try and flirt with some girl they'd probably never see again. Jean wouldn't want to ignore her and be rude, but he also didn't want to spend any time getting to know someone that wouldn't be around next week. Which was why they had "The Rule" in the first place. NO ONE (I.e. Eren) was supposed to bring surprise guests to events that had already been planned. The rule had been enacted when he had chosen a particularly... devoted girl. Whenever they hooked up and Eren dipped, she'd tracked them down, waited outside their classes just to see if they knew where Eren was or would be.
"Are you sure? I really don't mind taking a rain check." She smiled sweetly at all of them, giving them yet another chance to get out of lunch with her.
