𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐒𝐓𝐑𝐄𝐄𝐓𝐒 𝐖𝐄𝐑𝐄 busy with pedestrians, the sounds of bypassers chatting and cars honking filling the air. Kat sat on a bench on the sidewalk, watching everyone pass her by as she waited. Her hands sat neatly folded in her lap, and her legs were crossed at the ankles. She didn't know what she was waiting for, but that didn't bother her. It was pleasant, sitting there on that bench without a care in the world.
Someone sat on the bench beside her, but they didn't try to speak to her. They just sat and watched, just as Kat was. Kat enjoyed that. There was something really interesting about doing the same thing with a stranger but making no move to change the stranger part. Just existing together, not knowing anything about each other but sharing that small bit of space together.
"I've always loved people-watching." The stranger suddenly said, and Kat let her head turn to meet their eyes. It was Jane. A small smile graced her face as she quietly chuckled, turning her body to give Jane her full attention. The Paulson woman did the same, motioning with her hand to the busy street in front of them. "Each and every one of them has a story. I like to imagine what it might be."
Kat nodded, looking out at the people passing by. She noticed a tall man wearing a nice suit jacket and a neat pair of jeans, creating a sort of odd juxtaposition in styles. Kat softly smiled as she pointed him out to Jane. "What do you think his story is?"
Jane studied the man, deciding what she thought his story was. "He's a very smart-looking man like he's got a lot going for him. He's on his way to work, but he will stop and grab a coffee beforehand. He looks like the kind of man that can't function without coffee."
Kat chuckled, nodding along as she watched the man disappear into a cafe across the street. "I need coffee to get through the day, too."
Jane smiled at Kat. "You get that from your father."
"I hope that's where the similarities stop." Kat's bright mood fell, her eyes dropping to her hands in her lap. Her fingers started to pick at her nails as she spoke, her head shaking and jaw clenching. "I don't want to be anything like him."
