𝐁𝐄𝐀𝐂𝐎𝐍 𝐇𝐈𝐋𝐋𝐒 𝐇𝐈𝐆𝐇 School had an extremely calm aura about it in the days following the death of the mountain lion that was wreaking havoc on the town. Although no one had admitted it, everyone was scared while the mountain lion was alive, but now that it wasn't, everything seemed to return to normal. Kat, Lydia, and Allison were sitting around a table in the cafeteria during lunch, quietly conversing about their homework and snacking on the blueberries on Lydia's lunch tray.
Allison was hunched over an old book, quietly muttering in French. Kat shared a look with Lydia before asking, "What's la Bête du Gévaudan?"
"Huh?" Allison asked, jumping slightly by being taken out of her trance so suddenly. She quickly recovered, "Oh, uh, The Beast of Gevaudan."
Before Kat could question her further, Lydia asked, "The what of who?"
"The Beast of Gevaudan," Allison repeated, excitedly looking at her friends, "Listen. "A quadruped wolf-like monster prowling the Auvergne and South Dordogne areas of France during the years 1764 to 1767. La Bête killed over a hundred people, becoming so infamous that King Louie the Fifteenth sent one of his best hunters to try and kill it."
"Boring," Lydia commented, earning an eye roll from Kat as Allison continued.
"Even the church eventually declared the monster a messenger of Satan." Allison read, taking in the reactions of the girls around her. Kat was pleased that Allison was happy reading it and intently listened, but Lydia wasn't as invested.
"Hmm, still boring."
Allison was intent on changing Lydia's mind and continued reading the book, "Cryptozoologists believe it may have been a subspecies of a hoofed predator, possibly a mesonychid."
"Slipping into a coma bored," Lydia sighed, biting a single blueberry off her fork.
"While others believe it was a powerful sorcerer who could shape-shift into a man-eating monster." Allison wasn't giving up, and although she loved her, Kat was also losing interest.
"Alli, how does any of this have anything to do with your family?" Kat asked, brushing off Lydia's glance that told her to keep quiet.
Allison quickly nodded, "This. "It is believed that la bête was finally trapped and killed by a renown hunter who claimed his wife and four children were the first to fall prey to the creature." His name was Argent."
