We honestly should have started off with this method of communication.

I ask for her phone with my eyes and begin to type out my message.

"Hi. My name's Y/N. I just moved here a week ago and as you can tell, I don't know any Japanese. Maybe you could teach me sometime."

Can she please take the hint.

Hori's face lights up and she shakes her head profusely.

Yup... definitely didn't take the hint.

I return her phone and she continues to type to, I assume anyway, ask me more questions.

"So Y/N, where are you going to school? I wonder if we're close!"

I take the phone back from her and try to avoid eye contact.

God I'm sweating just trying to type this. This is so nerve racking. I grip the phone with max intensity.

Finishing up my message, a few kids my age walk by. They notice we're here and start towards us. I hold onto her phone until we have another chance to talk. As I was finishing up my message, there was a boy with strikingly purple hair and a girl with dirty blonde hair.

"Yo" intrudes the boy.

I try to make out the next few minutes of conversation but I'm heavily lacking in the Japanese department. From their body movements, I can tell they're having an exciting conversation though. Finally, Hori motions towards me like I was now the topic of conversation. I wave and her two friends wave back. I can only imagine now that Hori is explaining how I don't know any Japanese. From the look of surprise on their faces, I think I guess correct. They both said their goodbyes and headed on their merry way. When they left, I showed Hori my message in which she responded by explaining what just happened.

"Oh that's so cool! I wonder if we're in the same class. But just so you know, those two were my best friends, Yoshikawa Yuki and Ishikawa Tooru. They also go to our school!"

Wow, I'm already meeting her friends! This is great, I rejoiced.

I grabbed her phone back and began to text my message. While doing so, she guided us to a bench so that we could sit down.

"I can't wait! My first day is on Monday," I informed her. Before thinking, she blurts out her response in Japanese. She frantically tries to grab for her phone so she can type out her response but I'm one step closer. I smirk as I lean ever so slightly to keep it out of her reach. I can see her visible frustration until I show her what I wanted to type instead.

"You were going to tell me that you wanted to show me around, right?" I could see the hue in her cheeks change as she grabbed her phone back from me. She's so cute that I can't help but burst into laughter. She joins me and we spend those few minutes laughing at each other's stupidity.

After some time, she musters up the courage to ask a question that I don't think I could have ever been prepared for. I lean over to see the characters she's typing and she keeps me from looking as if we haven't already established the language barrier. I wish she could have seen the way the color in my face faded. That's saying something considering how melanin doesn't usually change colors.

Those questionable lines read," Hey Y/N, do you know why your skin is dark?"

Nigga what???

I looked her dead in her face, took the phone, and typed back, "I'll see you tomorrow, Hori. That question tired me out." I could tell she was obviously concerned from the way she was pulling my shirt and practically begging me to stay but if I'm being honest, it was taking all my strength to not body slam her into next week.

Never in my 15 years have I ever... Nope. I need sleep.

I leave her to think about what she's done and go home.

I have no more energy left for this.
