Somehow I land on my feet. Somehow I land unharmed. Somehow I got tangled in a little silver parachute that brought me down to earth safely. A little silver parachute... aren't those usually attached to sponsor gifts, not 14 year old girls?
I disentangle myself from the strings. By now the cloth is destroyed beyond repair, and when I'm free a little capsule lands with a small thump on the ground.
"Robin!" I call. He needs to see this.
"Iris? What is it?"
"I just got sent a sponsor capsule, I'm coming back now!"
If Robin replies I don't hear it, the only thing in my ears is the pumping of my own heart.
I burst into our camp and drop the capsule in front of Robin.
"You open it,"
He twists the lid and takes out a flask of something.
"What's in it?"
Robin flips open the top and the scent of tomato comes leaking out.
"Tomato soup, I think," he replies, "and it's still warm!"
There are a pair of spoons in the capsule, so I take them out and hand one to Robin.
"You have half and then I'll have what's left."
The soup is finished within 5 minutes. I'm left feeling even hungrier than before, and even though we have quite a lot in our backpacks, it needs rationing.
"Why dyou think they sent us soup?" I ask Robin.
"I don't know. But I'm grateful."
"Me too. The rabbit wasn't too filling,"
"Mmm."
"Well, I'm going back out. If you're in danger scream my name and I'll come back,"
He nods and I head back out of camp. That perfectly timed parachute saved my life, and it's something I can't forget. If I do go home, I'm going to thank the sender as much as I can. And if I don't... well, I don't really want to think about that.
My feet are wet again, and I realise that I'm standing in the stream, just a little further down from last time.
Something wants me to get out of the way. Call it a gut feeling, whatever, I just need to move.
I trip over in the stream and land with a splash in the water. This isn't far enough, says my heart, so I scoot backwards and a mere second later a tree branch crashes down next to me, exactly where I was sitting a second ago, and sends water droplets flying into my face. My head hurts from where the edge brushed it. Instinctively, I look up, trying to find the source of the disruption. There's a little human shaped figure scrambling up the tree that the branch fell from, just a dark silhouette against the bright sun.
They turn and look down at me. Then I hear them shout,
"Iris! I'm so sorry!"
She comes scrambling back down. It's the girl from 7, Rubella, the one I gave supplies to yesterday.
"What did you do that for?"
"Sorry, I thought you were someone else, I didn't mean to drop it on you, I'm sorry."
"Look, it's fine, I'm fine, just next time, check before you saw a branch down on my head."
"Sorry..."
"You better scram now, or I might try and kill you too,"
She nods and scarpers, running away through the trees and towards the desert.
"Iris!" Robin shouts.
"Robin! I'm good! A tree branch fell down that's all!"
I run back to camp.
He's waiting, biting his nails.
"Are you okay?" he asks.
"Yeah," I reply, holding my hand to the side of my head.
And I promptly pass out.
Sorry, the chapters are getting shorter by the day. I'm finding it hard to update every day, but I feel like I have to.
