Chapter 18, Maylin

When Angeni told me that not only did she know my birth parents but she was also my mother's godmother so she was like family and I felt hope bloom inside me. If she knew them then she could tell me about them or at least what they had done to get killed.
"If you knew them then you must know why they were murdered when I was just a baby. All I know is that they were running from their families but that's all I know about them" I said looking at Angeni while she dried her eyes and calmed herself down.
"Indeed I know why they were killed and while I don't know who did it I have a pretty good idea who did it. Trust me when I say that if I had proof of what they had done, they would be dead already" said Angeni, her mouth twisted into a snarl.
"Can you tell me about it or at least tell me about them? All I have is what I learn from these weird dreams, I just want to know about my parents. Don't get me wrong I love my adopted parents because they raised me but these are my real parents, the parents that gave their lives to have me and protect me" I explained desperately.
"I am surprised that you guys don't know about them, almost everyone knows about Robin and Nathan" said Derek, catching us all off guard. From the looks of there faces Angeni, Derek and Sally already knew about my parents and their murder but the rest of us were left in the dark.
"Let's sit down, this will take a while and will be emotional. We have to go back to the start to explain everything and have it make sense" said Angeni gesturing to her lounge room. 

We walked in and sat down getting comfortable since it was bound to be a long conversation. I wouldn't say it out loud but I was glad that unlike the others Charlie sat right next to me and gave me a look that said that he was there, I knew the others were there for me as well but Charlie was different somehow.
"When your mother, Robin, was just a young thing barely even four years old her parents, the previous leaders of the Aven clan passed away while fighting the Wolven clan but back then they went by the name of the Slyven clan" said Angeni starting her recount.
"Wait, why did our clan have a different name?" Charlie asked confused.
"Because the Slyven clan only changed to the Wolven clan around twenty-one years ago before both you and Maylin were born, the reason for the change was because your father who was second in command back then took over when the head of the Slyven clan was killed" said Angeni and I felt something inside of me churn. That the reason my parents were on the run from their families and the reason they were killed was starting to become more clear to me but at the same time I didn't want to believe it.
"Nathan, my father Nathan was Nathan Slyven wasn't he?" I asked,  feeling sick. I was hoping that somehow I was wrong.
"You are right, Nathan was Nathan Slyven the head of the Slyven clan and Robin was Robin Aven head of the Aven clan" confirmed Angeni.
"Oh" said Eric.
"My" continued Shawn.
"God" finished Kieran and we were in shock from this information, none more than myself.
"That means that Maylin is...." said Derek seeming to have thought of something that he didn't know before.
"She must be a hybrid, a Naga and a Bird shifter but she hasn't shown any changes yet, neither bird nor snake" said Sally in awe making me remember the feathers that I had woken up to but for now I kept quiet.
"I thought you guys already knew this" said Charlie.
"We knew that they were from different clans and that is what got them killed, we didn't even know they were from the Aven and Slyven clans" explained Sally.
"To answer your question, yes Maylin is a hybrid she is known as a Couatl but let me finish explaining about Robin and Nathan first" said Angeni and we all agreed to that. My head was already spinning with the fact that my parents were from different clans, now I was a hybrid creature but for now I pushed those thoughts away and tried to concentrate on Angeni.
"When Robin and Nathan first met they both thought the other was a human and they had an attraction towards each other so they decided to start dating. Robin and Nathan much like Maylin believed that the clans shouldn't fight or if they did fight that the humans should be protected so that they wouldn't be hurt since the other clans of creatures could fight back" said Angeni.
"I bet her opinion wasn't listened to" I scoffed thinking of the response I had gotten from the elders after only ordering them not to kill.
"No they weren't accepted for their opinions even more so when the clans found out that they were dating so they made it seem like they broke up but continued to see each other" sighed Angeni obviously pained to speak of this.
"Your father Charlie, Michael covered for Nathan when he was sneaking out after all they were like brothers he even encouraged Nathan to continue his love for Robin when they found out she was from the Aven clan. Of course that was after three weeks of him being depressed since they couldn't see each other anymore and Michael knew that they weren't going to get any better" Angeni continued.
"So they snuck out once more to see each other to put their feelings behind them but it was then that they realised that their feelings were not going anywhere. With nothing but a note to Michael they ran away to be together without their families getting in the way. I had heard from a letter that they had a child but before I could even see you, the news that they were killed came to me so I assumed that you had died as well. Since I am an ancient I am not allowed to side in clan wars so they wouldn't tell me anything else but if I knew that you were still alive I would have taken you in myself" finished Angeni.
"My Mother found out that she was pregnant that was why they ran, they did it to protect me. There were even times when they wanted to try and reason with the clans so that I wouldn't be in danger but they didn't because they knew that they would be killed along with me" I told them remembering the dreams that I had.
"I don't mean to rush but now that we know about Maylin's parents can you explain about her? I didn't even know Hybrids existed" said Shawn getting nods of agreement and I was happy to have the attention switch to something else. I didn't want to think about the fact that my parent's death's were my fault. I had thought that I was a normal human then I thought I was a normal supernatural creature but now I find out that I'm not even normal in a world of supernatural creatures.
"There are actually plenty of hybrids take Were-Panthers for example they are a hybrid between a Werewolf and a Panther Shifter. Maylin is known as a Couatl, a snake with feathers over the scales and big rainbow feathered wings. She of course has a Naga and Bird shifter form but her full form is a Couatl that is if she can access it" explained Angeni.
"So our full forms are like Maylin's Couatl form but her half form she can choose between snake and bird? That's not fair I want to be that cool" whined Sally. I was once again shocked, I thought finding out I was a hybrid I was sure they would hate me but Sally's enthusiasm showed me that in our little group no one would think any different about me.
"Your thoughts are written all over your face even if you're a hybrid it changes nothing, do you hear me?" demanded Charlie as he stared at me. His gaze was intense, making me only be able to nod with a blush.
"Oh no please don't start making goo-goo eyes at each other in front of us" groaned Kieran only to be elbowed by Eric.
"Shut up it's cute so don't ruin the moment" glared Shawn.
"Probably jealous that he doesn't have a girl to make goo-goo eyes with" teased Derek pulling Sally towards him in a half hug. This made me relax for the first time since we got here and it gave me some time to think and get my thoughts in order. Not only about my clan, the war and my parents but also about my feelings for Charlie and what to do about the war. Now that I knew what started the war I was even more ready to lay this war to sleep so no one else got hurt. That meant that I would be going against the elders to make an alliance with Charlie as he was one of the Wolven clan heir's meaning hopefully he would be able to talk to his clan. That brought another problem, my feelings for Charlie had long surpassed the crush stage so there was no way that I would be able to just brush my feelings off. I wonder if this was what my parents felt when they decided to be together even though they were meant to be enemies. Then again they didn't stand up for themselves against the clans because of me but me and Charlie didn't have a child to worry about so we could stand up against them without worrying about someone else bearing the consequences.

With that thought I took a deep breath seeing the others goofing about I tapped Charlie's shoulder to get his attention.
"What is it?" Charlie questioned turning towards me with a smile.
"I love you" I blurted out before I could back out of telling him and my confession made everyone go silent.
"I have liked you ever since I started college and saw you in my class, to start off with it was just because of how good looking you were. Then we had that assignment together and I got to know you a little better not by much but then these last few days getting to know you, the real you, not the mask you wear has made my crush progress to love. If you don't return my feelings or find it too risky to be with me then that is fine but I just needed to get it off my chest" I said blushing as I stood up ready to run off if I needed to. Before I could do anything though Charlie stood up and grabbed my hands tightly
"Your right that it is risky and dangerous but I could care less about that, I love you just as much as you love me. Our clans have taken so much from us already so I won't let them take this from us anymore" said Charlie smiling as he squeezed my hands. The others all seemed to realise how important this moment was since they stayed silent looking at us in awe, surprise and pride.
"If those clans think they can do anything to you guys then they will have to get through us first" said Derek.
"He is right about that we watched you pin after Maylin for a whole two years as long as you are happy then you have us on your side" smiled Shawn.
"Most of the clan will see it the same way, they are all sick of fighting not only that but you might not see it but after that test the clan has a lot of respect for you" said Kieran.
"I just thought of something, sorry to ruin the happy moment" Eric yelled making Charlie glared at him making him look sheepish.
"What did you think of?" I asked looking at him curiously.
"Well two things actually there is a girl in our clan May, that has a really big crush on Charlie I mean stalking crush so be careful around her when this gets out Maylin" warned Eric and I nodded understanding that a lot of people would probably be angry that I got to be with Charlie when they didn't.
"And the second thing?" asked Sally.
"The Wolven clan is actually the Slyven clan right therefore the clan heir for both of them is Maylin so if she goes to the council of creatures she can demand a crease fire" Eric started to explain getting dumbfounded looks.
"What? I have my smart moments as well" whined Eric with a pout making us laugh.
"If we go straight over the clans head's it might just work" smiled Charlie making my knees go weak but I smiled back. All of a sudden we heard an explosion making us all look towards where it came form and Sally let out a squeak.
"It's my brothers, Father, Mother and some of the elders" whispered Charlie.
"Do you think that we can reason with them? Get them to see things from our point of view?" I questioned.
"Samual would listen, I'm not sure about Father, Joshua lives to prove himself all the time even against family. Mother and the elders on the other hand are the ones that gave me the mission to kill you" explained Charlie.
"Michael will listen to you, no matter who it is against his family has always come first. Not only that but Maylin is Nathan's daughter so when he knows that he won't want to hurt her" commented Angeni.
"Then we have a chance, we can try our best to reason with them" I offered.
"No, there will be no we. I am going myself you guys wait here since this is my problem I will handle it myself" said Charlie. Leaning down he kissed my forehead and headed towards where the explosion came from.
"Should we leave him to go alone? Against a group of people? By himself?" asked Derek.
"No, we aren't going to let him deal with this himself, he wants to protect us but we are his friends meaning that we also want to protect him so let's go show him that he isn't alone anymore and he won't ever be alone again" I said following to where Charlie had gone, the others following behind me. Just like I said, Charlie wanted to protect us but we were always going to be stronger together, nothing would be able to stop us when we were together, not even our clans.
