Chapter 2, Charlie

Growing up I was always being compared to my brothers, to everyone in the clan including our parents I was nothing compared to them. I was always striving to catch up with my brother's, I worked twice as hard as they did but still I only had a few people accept me. Then again being a Naga wasn't exactly as easy as everyone thought it was. Yes that's right, I am a mythological creature known as a Naga or a snake monster. We were mostly human but the bottom half of us when we took our full Naga form transformed into a snake. This came with it's own problems since we did have poison in our eye teeth and we also couldn't let our legs become too dry or they would start to peel like scales as if we were shedding our skin. All in all, I wouldn't say I have had the hardest life but I also wouldn't say that I have had the best life either but there was one thing that made it better. Or I guess you could say one person that made it all better, she was called Maylin Hanley and she attended the same college as I did. When I first saw her I didn't really pay all that much attention to her but then we got paired together to do any assignment in our first year. It was then that I got to know how smart, kind and beautiful she truly was. After that I couldn't help but keep my eye out for her and even now every time I saw her my heart skipped a beat. So when I saw that stupid blood pixie push Maylin against the wall I reacted without thinking and called out to him after all I wasn't just going to leave her alone. Her shoulder length silky black hair was in tangles instead of its normal smoothness and her amethyst eyes that always captivated me shone with tears even with her square glasses I could see her tears and it made my blood boil in anger. I hadn't even thought about what I was doing after all I wasn't meant to pick fights with other mythical or supernatural creatures because it could start a war but I didn't care because he was going to hurt Maylin and I wasn't going to sit back and let that happen.

"Stupid Naga you should mind your own business, I smelt her before you did therefore she is mine" Derek snarled. With just a single thought I felt my self change into what was known as a half form. Each creature no matter what creature had a human form, a half form and finally their full form. A human form was rather an easy one to understand, it was the form that we were born with and it allowed us to hide ourselves from the humans. Half forms were when we started to take on characteristics of our creature side such as getting longer teeth, having scales appear, our eyes sometimes changed and there were even creatures that had wings sprout on their backs. We normally gained the ability to take on our half forms when we reached the age of six though some creatures could access their half forms before six and others not until they were ten, it all depended on what type of creature you were. Finally a full form was when we showed our true selves such as Drakken's turning into dragons, Naga's getting a full length tail instead of legs, mermaids growing a tail and needing water and even Centar's having their half horse body. Full forms weren't normally accessed until the creature was at least fifteen though again it could also be soon or later. With me taking on my half-form my tanned skin became coated in thick brown scales but only up my arms to my elbows, my legs until my knees and part of my face, the scales blended in with my skin so only the reflection from the moon light showed they were scales, my eyes changed so that they were glowing yellow and my eye teeth grew into large fangs that knew had poison in them.
"If you value your life and actually have a brain in your head you will walk away and not drag this on, it will only mean more pain for yourself" I warned him with a glare.
"Oh please you clearly don't think much of me if you are only in your half form, you should know that I have hunted hundreds of other creatures and none of them have hurt me" boasted Derek as his skin when from the white tinged red skin to fully blood red, he had slipped from a half from to his full form.
"Your first mistake was revealing yourself to someone that doesn't know about us, the second was that you threatened that innocent person, thirdly was that you didn't listen when I told you to leave but the fourth thing and the worse thing, was that out of everyone in this city you choose to go after her, I will make you regret ever going after Maylin," I snarled as I launched myself at him. We collided mid jump with snarls and began to throw punches and kicks at each other while also dodging the incoming attacks. Dodging out of the way of his fist I turned trying to bit him because I was a naga which was a snake demon my fangs had the ability to inject my victims with poison meaning if I could bite him that was the end of it, in my half form it would only paralyze him though. Unfortunately he seemed to know what I was trying to do as he turned quickly and slashed at me with his nails that had grown longer and sharper. We dodged around each other before finally I saw a spot in his defense that he left wide open and I dove in and grabbed him by the throat and slammed him in the wall making him lose his breath. Once he realised the position he was in he started to struggle grabbing at my wrist but his claws wouldn't pierce through my scales.
"Listen here and clean those ears of yours out, Maylin is off limits to everyone that doesn't want to be killed, you better tell that to your buddies as well, if you or they go after her again I won't have any mercy and I will kill you do you understand that?" I sneered and he nodded as best as he could with a hand around his throat.
"Good, make sure that you remember my warning," I said before I gave one last squeeze before I let go and he scampered off into the dark. I turned and started to walk towards Maylin, I would have to explain what was going to her now and hopefully I wouldn't frighten her any more than she already was. Before I got any closer to her, three people that unfortunately I had seen before jumped in between the two of us. The one in the middle had a sword that made me jump back and hiss since I knew there was no way that I would be able to beat them with my bare hands. The three that had jumped down were the elders of the Aven clan, the rival clan of the Wolven clan, which was the clan that I belonged to. With a glare and a snarl I turned and started to leave quickly hoping that they weren't stupid enough to to hurt Maylin since she had nothing to do with our world.
"Wait Charlie" called Maylin but I didn't turn back as I jumped away. Even if I wanted to stay with her I couldn't after all if my parents found out I had been near the Aven clan elders and not tried to kill them I wouldn't hear the end of it. The one thing that did ease my mind was that Maylin was a human that meant killing her would break the rules that every creature had to honor unless they wished to be slaughtered by the ancient creatures that governed our world.
