Maddie opens their eyes and notices that they're back in a familiar place: their hospital room. Maddie's body and their soul, aren't alone. Melissa is there. The Melissa.
She is there by herself. Maddie's soul stands frozen in the corner of the room. Maddie is afraid that if they take a breath, Melissa could notice. A tear falls down their cheek. The walls are yellow, but not like the yellow of the sunflowers in Spase. A pale yellow to attempt to calm the people that enter.
Maddie is anything but calm. They're silently freaking out inside.
"I'm right here," Maddie tries to relay to Melissa. "I'm right here!"
Melissa looks different. She is pale, no makeup, and her eyes swollen. She appears to not have slept in days.
"How long have I been out?" Maddie thinks.
Melissa reaches out for Maddie's hand and holds it tight. She outlines the crevices in their hand with her index finger. She starts humming "Somewhere Over the Rainbow."
"It's Momma's song, " Maddie says to themselves.
Melissa rests her head against Maddie's shoulder.
"Oh, Mad. What am I going to do?" Melissa cries.
Tears roll down her cheeks as she squeezes Maddie's hand. The heart monitor beeps as Melissa shakes her leg, showing her anxiety. With every fiber of their being, Maddie feels a shock go through their hand. Maddie's soul's hand. Maddie attempts to squeeze back with their soul's hand in a fist.
Maddie's physical body's hand twitched in Melissa. Melissa gasps.
"Oh, Maddie! You have to pull through. You have to give me the chance to tell you that I didn't leave that night because I was disgusted by you or didn't like you. I know I can be forward at times, but after we, well, you know, I got scared. I left. You have to come back. Who else am I going to have the "bitching hour" with... "
Before she could finish her sentence, the surge pulled Maddie into themselves again and into Spase.
