Kiara’s POV:
The path to Mt. Hakurei made my stomach twist. Maybe it was because I couldn’t stop thinking about Sesshomaru—and the demoness he’d gone after.
I shook my head. No. I needed to trust him. I would trust him.
The moment I reached the entrance to Mt. Hakurei, the purity of the mountain washed over me, powerful enough to erase weak demons in seconds. But something felt wrong. A faint swirl of miasma drifted through the air.
Miasma? Here?
I followed its trail until two figures came into view.
“Naraku,” Kikyo’s voice echoed, sharp with venom.
“I’ll ask one more time. What is your true purpose here?”
I ducked behind a rock and listened.
“You wish to know my purpose?” Naraku smirked. “Then I’ll show you.”
“Kikyo cannot be harmed,” I whispered to myself. “As long as Onigumo’s heart beats inside him…”
But the moment I thought it—
“Ugh!”
Naraku slashed her. My eyes widened. She had no blood to spill—her body was soil and bone—but this was her last life. She couldn’t withstand another death.
I moved before I realized it, drawing my bow and releasing an arrow. Naraku flicked it away like nothing.
I rushed to Kikyo, planting myself in front of her.
“Ahh… Lady Kiara to the rescue,” Naraku laughed, wrapped in his shimmering barrier.
“Tsk.” I raised my bow again, glaring at him.
Kikyo remained on her knees, breath shallow.
“You believed I couldn’t harm you,” Naraku taunted. “You thought Onigumo’s pitiful heart would stop me?” He laughed.
“That human’s love was nothing but a tool. I needed his heart to survive after Kiara injured me.” His eyes snapped to mine.
My grip tightened.
“You half‑demon,” I spat.
Kikyo’s voice trembled with fury. “I curse you… Naraku.”
A spike shot toward me. I barely raised a barrier in time. Behind us, the cliff dropped into a raging river thick with miasma.
“Below is a river steeped in poison,” Naraku said with a cruel smile.
I glanced at Kikyo. I couldn’t attack while holding the barrier. She met my eyes and nodded.
She seized my bow, drew an arrow, and fired.
Naraku hissed as it struck his stomach. Kikyo fired again, but tentacles burst out, slamming against my barrier. She fought through them, purifying and slicing as many as she could.
“Two priestesses against one half‑demon,” I mocked. “Who do you think wins?”
Naraku chuckled. “Do not underestimate me, Lady Kiara. Join me—or face me. And I think you already know which I choose.”
I wanted to slap that smirk off him.
“We have one arrow left,” Kikyo warned.
“Can you still purify?”
“Yes. Barely.”
“I’ll drop the barrier. The moment I do, we hit him with everything we have. Then we run—we can’t finish him alone.”
My strength was draining fast. She nodded.
“One,” I whispered.
“Two,” she breathed.
“Three.”
I let the barrier fall. We both began chanting, gathering our remaining power. Light surged around us.
Just before it burst forward—
Something tore through my stomach.
I gasped, looking down. A tentacle. Blood spilled warm against my clothes. Kikyo was skewered beside me.
Coughs wracked my body, blood slipping past my lips.
Naraku’s shadow loomed. “I read your movements. Kiara. Kikyo. This mountain will be your grave.”
He ripped the tentacles free, sending us flying off the cliff.
Wind roared in my ears. The toxic river rushed toward us.
For a moment, I heard my son’s voice.
“Papa loves Kouta too!”
“Do I?” Sesshomaru teased.
“Uwaaa!”
I laughed softly at the memory. Sesshomaru’s kiss. Our son’s warmth.
“I love you,” I had whispered.
The vision shattered as the river neared.
I reached out, grabbed Kikyo, and forced out one last spell.
Damn you, Naraku.
