Sesshomaru’s POV
Faint sound of footsteps continued behind us.
Persistent.
Istopped walking.
The forest stilled as Jaken and the others halted beside me. Even the wind seemed to grow cautious, slipping quietly between the trees.
Slowly, I turned my gaze over my shoulder.
They were still following.
The half-breed. The priestess. The monk. The demon slayer.
How tiresome.
“Why,” I said coldly, “are you following us?”
My voice cut through the forest like winter air.
The priestess Kagome stiffened under my gaze. She scratched the back of her neck awkwardly, forcing a smile that was far too bright for the tension in the air.
“O-oh… well…” She laughed softly. “At least until we find Kikyo?”
How transparent.
Humans were terrible liars.
“Tch. I told you we don’t need his he—ugh!”
Inuyasha’s complaint was abruptly interrupted when the monk struck the back of his head with his staff.
“Control yourself, Inuyasha,” Miroku said smoothly.
“Damn you—!”
Kagome quickly covered the half-demon’s mouth.
“We won’t do anything that will burden you,” she said firmly. “We just want to help… and protect the children.”
The demon slayer stepped forward slightly.
“That is all.”
Silence settled between us.
So.
Because of what Kouta had said earlier… they believed my son possessed information regarding the disturbance.
Fools.
Yet… they were not entirely wrong.
My son’s abilities were still developing. His senses perceived things others could not.
Even I had not yet determined the full extent of what he could see.
A quiet breath left me.
“Do as you wish.”
I turned away without waiting for their response and continued walking, Kouta resting against my arm.
Behind me, Inuyasha grumbled under his breath.
“…Feels like everyone’s teaming up against me.”
Of course they were.
Even humans possessed more patience than he did.
Jaken scurried up beside me, peering nervously upward.
“My Lord Sesshomaru… is it truly acceptable to allow them to follow?”
“Let them.”
My voice remained calm.
“If they make a single misstep… they will die.”
Jaken gulped but nodded eagerly.
Still…
My gaze shifted slightly toward Kagome walking behind us.
