Chapter 21
Grace's P.O.V.-
Adam chose this movie called White Noise to watch. It's about how this man's wife dies and he tries to communicate with her. Any normal person would think it was somewhat scary, but overall boring. I, on the other hand, was so scared that I thought I was going to pee my pants. The overall movie was predictable and I knew what to expect within the first half hour, but the suspense got to me.
I watched as the main character would watch a snow filled television screen, desperately hoping to see his wife's face or hear her voice. I knew in the back of my mind that the images of ghosts that would pop up on the screen weren't real, but every now and then a ethereal face would flash across the screen while the horror music in the background would scream for effect. And I screamed too. By the end of the movie, half my face was hidden behind Blake's shoulder and I'm pretty sure he lost all feeling in his left hand. I know my fingers were definitely crapped after squeezing his hand for over an hour.
Thankfully, the movie ended and I unclamped my hand from his. I was too embarrassed to look either of them in the eyes, so I just flopped, face down, onto one of the pillows that was at the end of the couch.
They both laughed at me for what had to be the hundredth time this night. Apparently making me sit through a horror film was very entertaining to them.
They continued to laugh at me, so I curled up into a ball and turned so I was facing the back of the couch. I felt Blake's arms around my waist. "Aw, come on darling, we're just joking with you."
"No!" I protested. He tried to pull me up, but I refused to move. It was bad enough that they were laughing at me, I didn't want have to see them do it.
"Grace!" Blake complained, "We're sorry for laughing at you."
"I'm not," Adam said.
"Shut up," Blake snapped, though I could tell he still found it funny.
I heard Adam chuckle under his breath. "We won't laugh no more, Grace. Promise," he said to me.
He almost sounded sincere, but I didn't buy it, "Yes you will!" I protested.
I heard both of them try to suppress a laugh. "Darling, we were only laughing cause of your reactions."
"Well isn't that comforting!" I mumbled sarcastically into the pillow.
"They were just too cute..." I heard another chuckle escape Blake's lips.
Face down in the pillow, I don't know whether I blushed because of the compliment or because I was still embarrassed.
"Yeah," said Adam, "And think of it this way: you have a really good scared scream. I bet they can use you in movies and stuff."
I pushed my face up from the pillow so I could glare at him. He laughed out loud and held up his hands, "Or not..."
Blake took this time to his advantage and wrapped his arms around me, pulling me into his chest. "No more movies tonight, I promise," he told me sincerely.
Bright red, I mumbled, "Good," and laid my head against his chest. I wearily looked around the dark room, half expecting blurred, ghostly faces to flash before my eyes. I laughed inwardly. As if I didn't have enough troubling thoughts spinning around in my head. This was just the frosting on the cake.
