Chapter 18

Blake's P.O.V.-

Chris slammed his finger down on the power button and the music stopped.  "Hey! Don't be messing with the music," Adam complained as he reached over from the passenger side and turned the radio back on.

"My truck, my radio," Chris grumbled as he shut off the radio once again.

I scowled, "What's with you?" I asked from the backseat of his truck, "Ever since Grace left you been all moody."

"I'm not freaking moody!" Chris growled.

The car fell silent and Adam and I exchanged bewildered looks.  "This can't be over the fact that Grace showed you up on the guitar, can it?" Adam asked.

Chris laughed, but there was no humor in his voice, "No, of course not. You guys know I like a good challenge."

            "So?" I pushed.

"So, it doesn't freaking matter!" Chris snapped.

I opened my mouth to protest, but Adam gave me a warning look that I should keep my mouth shut.  I gritted my teeth and slumped back into the seat.  That's when I remembered the person sitting besides me.  "What about you?" I asked Chebby, "You haven't said a word since we left my place."

Chebby kept his eyes on his hands, which were clenched tightly together in his lap.  "Do you know something?" Adam pressed.

Chebby glanced up and I saw Chris glare at him through the rearview mirror.  Chebby pressed his lips into a straight line, "I don't have the right to say," he stated gruffly.

Now Adam was getting impatient, "Can you two stop being so secretive and fess up already?"

Another wave of silence ran through the truck.  Chris drummed his fingers on the steering wheel while Chebby shifted uncomfortably in his seat.  I began to feel uneasy inside.  Was it really that bad the neither of them could admit what was wrong?

            "Well?" Adam said impatiently.

Chris and Chebby's eyes flickered to each others for a split second.  Then Chris let out a long sigh and looked straight out in front of him.  "I might lose the house."

He said it so quietly that I had to lean forward in my seat so my ears could pick up his words.  My heart suddenly felt thick and it began pounding, slow and hard, in my chest.

"What do you mean you might lose it?" Adam asked outraged.

"I mean that I have a mountain of taxes I haven't paid -- can't pay -- and I literally can't afford to live there anymore," he said annoyed.

"Wait," I interjected, "What about your parents? I thought they sent you money every month."

Chris shook his head, "They haven't sent me anything in two months and the last check they gave me was only worth $500."

"What!" Adam and I shouted simultaneously.

"How have you two been able to survive for the past two months?" Adam asked furiously.
