Chapter 19
Grace's P.O.V.
The hot sand burned the bottoms of my feet, but my cold toes welcomed the warmth that it brought to my body. I looked up and scanned the vast ocean blue, a warm breeze brushing past my face. I pulled any free hair that the wind was playing with and tucked it behind my ears.
"The beach, you're always at the beach," said a distant voice.
My body stiffened at the familiar sound of his voice. I turned to face him, hands on my hips. "What do you want Jake?" My own voice seemed to echo down the shoreline.
He smirked at me, "I just wanted to say hello."
I rolled my eyes, "Go away." I heard my voice ripple down towards his body.
He crossed his arms, "You're not very friendly anymore."
"Well neither are you," I muttered. I narrowed my eyes at him, "What do you want?" I asked louder.
His eyes brightened and he gave me a knowing look, "It's going to rain, Grace."
I furrowed my eyebrows. "What are you talking about?" I asked, regarding the clear blue sky, "It's beautiful out."
He just shook his head, "Beauty can't last forever."
"What's that supposed to mean?" I demanded. He didn't answer. Instead, he just started walking away, further and further down the beach. "Jake!" I called. I started running after him, losing my balance every now and then as the sand shifted beneath me. "Jake," I said breathlessly when I finally reached him. He still paid no attention to me. I gritted my teeth, "Jake!" I yelled frustrated. I grabbed his arm and spun him around so he was facing me.
I stumbled backwards as I took in his new features. His eyes were dark and full of hatred and his face was bruised. I gasped when I felt my back hit a cold brick wall while he got closer and closer to me. I looked from side to side and was shocked to find I was right by the deli that Blake and I passed on our first date. Our first date...
I shifted my gaze back to Jake who was very close to me now, looking threatening just like he had on that night. Palms flat against the wall I whispered, "Please don't hurt me."
He just glared at me, "It's going to rain," he stated harshly.
"What does that mean?" I asked desperately.
He didn't reply. Instead he looked down the street, beyond my vision. Then he turned back to me with sad eyes, "I'm glad you're so forgiving," he whispered.
And then he was gone.
Overwhelmed, I slid onto the ground and hugged my knees close to my body. Tears started to roll down my face when a new voice spoke, "Darling, what's wrong?"
My heart skipped a beat and I looked up to see a beautiful pair of green eyes gazing into mine. We were in a totally new scenery now. White walls surrounded us and the whole room seemed to be glowing. Even he seemed to be radiating beams of light off of his body.
