Chapter 26

Blake's P.O.V.

I should have known from the moment I stared into her eyes in that diner's parking lot. I should have known it from the moment we kissed in the rain. It shouldn't have taken someone like Lisa, a twisted girl from my past, to make me realize such a monumental factor of my life.

It was Saturday afternoon, the afternoon of the concert Grace and I had gone to. My eyelids were heavy and my body was questioning me of why I wasn't at home asleep. My mind was too challenged to sleep, though,

So here I was, walking on a sidewalk on a Saturday afternoon with nothing to do. Grace was exhausted, so I figured I'd let her relax for the day.

Just thinking about her made me smile and I brought my hand up to the rim of my neck where my new necklace laid against my skin.

We'd arrived back at her house at around three o'clock in the morning. Our steps were slower and uncoordinated and our eyes were heavy, but she was radiating with happiness.

The rain had stopped by now, but her hair still lay damp on her back. She turned to face me, "Best night of my life," she proclaimed.

"Really?" I asked astonished.

She nodded and kissed me swiftly on the lips. Then she took something out of her pocket. "I grabbed it right before we left," she said sheepishly while handing me the package, "It's not anywhere near as amazing as your present but..."

I opened up the small box to reveal a green Fender guitar pick that was attached to a delicate silver chain. It matched hers perfectly. I smiled and pulled the necklace out of the box. "No, this is ten times better than anything I cold have ever gotten you."

If she blushed, I wouldn't have been able to tell. Her cheeks were already rosy from the cold rain. But I knew she must have been flattered because she gave me one of her small smiles and looked down, trying to avert her eyes from mine.

I smiled to myself. She didn't realize that I sought out to embarrass her. Her reaction was priceless in my eyes and I couldn't get over how cute she looked when she blushed. I looped the chain around my neck and fastened the clasp. I brought the pick around to my front and looked up at her.

She smiled and absentmindedly played with her own guitar pick necklace that always hung around her neck. "Sorry if it's too corny."

I shook my head, "No, I love it."

She grinned with satisfaction and then stifled a yawn. It was then I realized how tired she looked. We both had had a long night. "Let's get you inside, darling."

"No," she said reluctantly, "I don't want you to go."

I wrapped my arms around her waist and kissed her forehead. For a moment I just stared ahead of me before I pulled back and looked down at her. Forehead to forehead I spoke in a whisper, "You'll see me soon."

"Promise?" she murmured.

The corner of my lip twitched up into a small smile, "Promise."

I kissed her softly on the lips before helping her get up onto her roof and back in her room. She got through her window with ease and I watched as she disappeared into her house. A few moments later, her head poked out and she smiled. "Bye," she said sheepishly.

"Bye..."

She ducked back inside and I heard the window shut. I took a deep breath and sighed. Even the smallest goodbyes were sad.

Then, I walked home.

Now I was walking, but to where? I had inattentively started walking towards Grace's house, even though I knew she'd be resting. I sighed and turned in the opposite direction when I reached the next corner.
