Chapter Twenty Eight

"Has anyone gotten anything on their whereabouts?"

Tony is furiously typing away at his computer, Bruce beside him. "Nat, you have anything?" Bruce asks her.

"No.. No I don't."

"We don't have much time! They could be hurt or worse," Tony yelled at the group, continuing to look through everything he had in front of him; cameras from the streets, news reports, building maps, abandoned buildings, everywhere. He couldn't find any trace as to where they went.

No one could.

"Alright, we have to keep looking, but we need to speed this up. We can't lost them both," Nat said to them all, getting back to their search.

They all knew they were running out of time but they didn't know how much time they had left.

Steve was finally back to full strength, he felt more himself but still, he was brainwashed.

Zemo walked through the door, he grabbed Steve without a word and yanked him out into another room. Steve was complying, but he also didn't know where he was going. They walked into a room, larger than the one he was in but it still had those weird windows in the room.

Zemo pushed Steve into the center of the room and walked back out the door, closing it. Steve stumbled and caught his footing, looking around the room. That's when the door opened again and two women walked in, objects in their hands.

They walked right up to Steve and yanked on his hands, putting metal brackets around his fingers, shielding him from harming himself.

Or to make him stronger.

Nonetheless the two women walk away and back out the door and shortly after they leave, Zemo is back with a someone else.

Zemo dragged Bucky out of his previous room and into the large one. That's when he sees another figure in the room; Steve.

Bucky keeps his emotions at bay and just like Steve, gets pushed into the room. Zemo walks out.

They both look at one another in the room, and around the room until a static sound is heard over them and then a voice.

"You both are the assets created by HYDRA, now we must see if our new one can rid the old one. Steve, you are to take out the man in front of you to be deemed worthy. If you cannot, we will kill you. That's your first mission, go." Zemo said over the speaker.

Steve begins to comply, he starts to charge at Bucky without knowing it is him to complete his mission.

So Bucky tries to do what Steve did to him. Talk.

Steve throws a punch to Bucky and Bucky blocks it with his metal arm. Steve throws a right hook and book doges. "Stevie baby, you don't want to do this," Bucky says to him.

Steve doesn't care, he just continues to throw punches and keeps his footwork steady, articulated as Bucky keeps trying to break him.

"Steve, it me pal, Bucky."

"I'm not going to fight you, I love you too much to fight you like this in this state."

Punch. Punch. Kick.

"Stevie, you're still that little kid from Brooklyn who never backed away from a fight, arent ya?"

Steve side steps Bucky and gets a swing which bring Bucky falling to the ground and Steve gets on top of him, right hook to the face and Bucky begins bleeding from the metal brackets on Steve's fingers. Bucky holds one hand of Steve's away with his metal arm as he tries to block steve with his right.

Steve gives another blow to the stomach, another straight into the jaw. Left hook to the side of his face, one to his rib cage. "Stevie, it's Bucky, your best pal, look at me."

"I'm not going to fight you." Bucky tells him, but he can't take being hit so he moves swiftly, pushing Steve up and off him and he gets up and pushes Steve into the wall.

Bucky grips Steve's hands and place them on the wall, but Steve kicks him and knees Bucky's legs, stomach, thighs. Anywhere he can reach as Bucky whispers to Steve. "I can do this all day, Steve. I saved your ass a million times I know I can break you from this weak brainwashing. I know your in there, doll." Bucky angrily whispers, staring dead into Steve's dull blue eyes.

"I don't know you!" Steve yells.

"Yes you do! You do doll, stop being such a punk!"

"No i don't!"

"You do know who I am. I'm James Barnes, your best pal, I'm with you till the end of the line."

Bucky watched him, sees the life go back into Steve's eyes as those words click into his mind. The same words that brought Bucky back are the ones that brought Steve back.

"Stevie, I know you're there, just keep being angry at me, keep hitting me, I'll get us out." Bucky whispers to him.

"No."

Bucky can see the dreary look in Steve's eyes amongst the stern face he's holding, Bucky loves the story his ocean eyes hold.

"Just do it, push me and then follow me."

Steve pushes Bucky, he looks back at the glass and gives a smirk and then he runs straight to the door, metal arm out as he uses full force against it and break through. He stumbles and sees Steve coming behind him.

But he picks up Steve and runs, he knows these places and he can't have Steve behind him and get caught or get lost. He can't lose him again. Steve winces as Bucky begins to run.

He keeps turning and going down hallways until he reaches stairs and goes up three flights and runs out the door down a long corridor. He's hustling and turns left and opens the door, the beams of the sun setting hitting his eyes as he bolts outside. He begins to run until he sees a team of agents running towards him.

His friends. Bucky smiles wide, happy to see his friends again, "better late than never. Now go take down this hydra Base, I'm taking Steve to your jet."

"Got it, Bruce is in the jet, let me go back with you and take you," Nat says to him.

"No you go. Destroy HYDRA for the both of us, okay? I'll get to the jet safely," Bucky replies, a gentle smile across his lips.

She hesitates but nods and turns to run with the rest of the group. Bucky carries Steve to the ship, still not talking.

"I'm so sorry I hurt you. I'm so so sorry," Steve whimpers into Bucky's neck, Bucky's neck slowly becoming wet in the process.

"Doll, you didn't do it on purpose, I'm just sorry I couldn't get to you sooner. I prayed you never had to feel what it was like to get brainwashed and I had to watch you lose all your memories," Bucky responds, sadness forming in his voice.

"You did?"

"Yep.. through the glass. I couldn't break free-" Bucky's voice breaks, "they tied me down and I had to watch, I tried to get to you but I couldn't."

"Oh Bucky, it's okay, we are both safe. We are safe now." Steve mumbles as they reach the Quinjet.

Bruce walks up and tends to their wounds without a word, not asking questions about what happened in there or how they got these wounds.

Shortly after the rest came back to the jet, and Nats look alone Bucky and Steve knew that they wiped out that base.

Zemo and his crew were finally going to be put away at Shield quarters, away from the world.

They all boarded the ship and left for the tower as Bucky and Steve curled up into one another, not letting one another go.
