it was late, closer to midnight. you laid awake in bed staring at the ceiling with a mind that felt so full but so empty at the same time, and a heart that ached for your brother. you could feel him all the time. you always knew where he was and how he felt, but you were too scared to ever do anything. until that night.

you sat up in bed and gently removed gojo's arm from around your waist. he shuffled and turned to lay on his stomach and his quiet snores resumed. you quietly slid out of bed and peeked through the blinds to see the dark blue sky and the quiet street. you never noticed until it was silent, but gojo really did live in a nice neighborhood.

you figured that that night would be a better night than any to find your brother. it was warm, silent, and you'd be back before gojo knew that you were missing. you just wanted to talk to mahito, even if the conversation went nowhere. even if he ignored you and refused to hear what you had to say, you at least wanted to try.

you left home wearing a greenish-gray shirt and white sweatpants that reached your ankles and white socks that stopped at the meat of your calf. you had slipped on a pair of black slippers, opting to walk to your destination. you needed the time to think and the fresh air to clear your mind. and even if you knew exactly what you wanted to say, the walk there was helpful to calm your nerves that made goosebumps grow on your arms.

"hey," you whispered.

laying in the grass beside you, mahito glanced at you. "hey."

"we should talk, y'know."

"i've got nothing to say," he bluntly replied.

"will you listen to me?"

he shrugged. "it depends on what you say."

"i guess that's better than nothing..." you sighed. "you won't believe me, but i really was trying to protect the both of you. he had nothing to do with it-"

"why are you even protecting him in the first place?" he scoffed. "he's the enemy. if he'd just stayed out of our way then we would've never had to go to that school, and you would've never met him."

"i tried to avoid him when we first met... i wanted nothing to do with him and i tried my best to stay away. but satoru makes me happy now. that's not his fault."

"first names... it's worse than i thought!" he groaned.

you sighed at the interruption again. "he is important to me. besides, i'm the one who lied and put everyone at risk. blame me."

"i know that. that's what geto wants me to think, but i don't want to blame you. clearly you wanted a change, and it had to be him. so i'll blame him."

you stayed silent with a loss for words. fortunately, mahito saved you when he started to speak again.

"i want to think that you wouldn't die like this so easily, but you like to take the fault. i'm not surprised that you accepted geto's offer, even though i told him that it wasn't an option."

you bit your lip. "i wanted to be the one to tell you. but suguru has never cared much about what i wanted."

"is that really what you think?" mahito inquired in confusion.

you shrugged. "he told me that he hated me."

mahito began to quietly laugh. he eventually had to cover his mouth because of how irritated you looked at him.
