"you're awake," gojo said quietly.
"yes," y/n nodded. "i am."
gojo inched closer and closer, letting go of tiny breaths with every step. it took a moment, but eventually he fell to his knees at the side of the bed, placing his hands in his lap and staring.
"you're really awake," he repeated. "shoko said that it could take months..."
"who's shoko?" y/n asked. "in fact, who are you? and where am i?"
"i'm satoru. gojo satoru. you're at our- my apartment."
"what happened?" she asked him, leaning closer. she winced and held her hand to her forehead. "my head's all fuzzy."
"you don't remember anything?" gojo's eyes widened.
"well, i feel this weird pain in my heart, and my lips burn a little bit. what do you think that is?"
"i think i might know," he told her. gojo sighed and sunk his face into the heavy comforter, muffling the rest of his words. "this is all my fault."
"i can't understand you, gojo satoru."
gojo lifted his head to look at her again. "you did at one point. better than anybody."
"i meant that i don't understand you when you mumble like that," she laughed.
hearing her light laughter brightened the room. gojo's heavy heart finally lifted and he swore that he could feel a weight lift off of his shoulders.
"i never thought i'd hear that again," he whispered.
"i have a feeling that something happened between us," y/n spoke up. "and you're afraid to tell me."
"i'm never afraid," he chuckled. "do i look like someone who scares easily?"
y/n paused for a moment, staring into gojo's bright blue eyes. she felt herself sinking in them as they pulled her in. all the blues swirled together in the hurricane of an iris that he held, with his deep pupils sitting at the very center, staring right back at her. as if she was floating above the clouds.
but despite never meeting this man before, she recognized his eyes. she felt familiar with his snow-white hair that swung in front of his face, and that the eyes that he was hiding behind sunglasses not long ago were ones that had met hers before.
maybe she had been trying to give herself something to understand, so that at the very least she wouldn't feel so confused by everything that gojo said.
"yes, you do."
her words were hushed and simple, but it left the both of them without anymore words to say. the room was silent, aside from the ringing in y/n's ears and gojo's pulse echoing in his mind. when gojo didn't move to say anything else, y/n turned back to look out the window, this time with a slight frown and a glassy glimmer over her eyes.
"are you hungry?" gojo finally asked. "maybe it'll be easier to talk over a full stomach."
"sure," she sniffed. "thanks."
y/n didn't spare him a second glance, even as he walked out of the bedroom once more, shutting the door behind him. neither the shaking of the trees outside nor the muffled hum of gojo's stove in the kitchen could stop her from crying. she didn't know why the tears fell, but she couldn't help herself. she pulled her knees into her chest and hid her face, letting the tears stain the blanket.
