Will Di Solace felt a soft buzzing on his hip. His pager was going off; someone needed his help.

He quickly dashed down the hospital hallway, freshly-ironed scrubs shuffling as he ran.

He pushed the emergency room doors open with both hands, rushing to the occupied stretchers nearby.

Will turned to the nearest trauma nurse. "Where do you need me to go?"

The nurse quickly checked her clipboard. "Two patients came in a few moments ago. Car crash." She pointed to the twin stretchers in the corner. "Severe head and chest trauma; faulty seatbelts apparently."

Will pat her on the shoulder. "Thanks."

He turned away before she could respond. He grabbed gloves from the designated box and tucked his wedding ring away in his pocket so it wouldn't get caught on the rubber.

He confidently strode forward, ready to handle his patients.

William Di Solace, with years of medical experience, stopped in his tracks when he laid eyes on the two patients.

A young girl, no older than seven years old, lay unconscious and bloody on the temporary bed. A younger boy, who seemed like her brother, cried out in pain.

Will took a deep, shaky breath. "Come on, Solace. You've handled accidents like these before. Get it together and get work done."

He put on a fake smile to address the boy. "Hey, kiddo. I'm Doctor Di Solace and I'm here to help. Can you point to where it hurts so I can get you fixed up?"

The young boy sniffled and pointed to his arm. He then pointed to his sister. "Help her, please. She got hit bad, real bad!"

Will looked over at the girl, noticing a weird shine in her side. He lift her arm gently, and saw a piece of shrapnel poking out from below her rib cage.

He looked up frantically. "I need an open O.R. and make it quick! We're losing blood here!"

Another doctor rushed to his side. "What about the other patient?"

Will pointed down the hallway. "Get some x-rays done. He should be fine, but get a MRI if he starts acting out of the ordinary."

The other doctor nodded and wheeled the boy away.

Will clutched the side bar of the gurney and pushed it towards the surgeons who were prepping the operation room.

He hurried into the side room to get ready for surgery. As he washed his hands, he muttered prayers to the gods. "Apollo and Asclepius, please guide me and give me steady hands to keep this Jane Doe safe. Thanks."

~time skip, hours later. Will's shift at the hospital ended~

<CHANGE OF SCENERY>

Nico held the pencil to his lips, thinking for a moment. He sighed. "What's the point of crossword puzzles? What do you gain from this?"

He heard the soft click of the door unlocking, so he put the book down and stood up.

Will opened the door and dropped his backpack on the floor.

Nico opened his arms for a hug. "Hello, my love! How was your shift? Was it too busy?"

Will numbly kicked his shoes off and fell into his husband's arms, without saying a word.

Nico held his husband closer. "Will? What happened?" He pulled away and did a quick evaluation.

His expression fell as he felt the chill of death radiate off of Will. "Oh no."

Will nodded. "I could only see Bianca in her. There was a young boy, too. He was around Michael's age."

Nico rested his hand on Will's cheek. "It's not your fault."

Will didn't even look up. "Hm."

"William, look at me."

Blue eyes made contact with brown ones.

"Don't blame yourself. You know how quickly I spiraled when I did."

Will's eyes began to water and he could barely speak above a whisper. "All I could see was them, Neeks. I basically let my own child-"

"No you didn't. You did the best you could, I know it." Nico put his other hand on Will's other cheek.

Will bit his lip. "What if I got distracted? What if I made an error because all I could think of was them?"

"You can't do this to yourself. She's in Elysium; she had a good life." Nico's eyes shifted, letting him see into the underworld.

Will let out a sharp laugh. "Yeah, a short one."

Nico sighed. "Please don't do this, Will. You're making things worse. Mourn if you like, but don't blame yourself for something you had no control over."

Will murmured something to himself quietly.

Nico looked back up at his husband. "What?"

"Can I wake up the kids?" Will repeated.

Nico pulled his husband into a tight hug. "It's pretty late, but you need to do this. Yes, go upstairs and wake them up."

Will clutched the fabric of Nico's shirt weakly in his hands. He buried his face into Nico's shoulder. "I'm sorry."

Nico kissed the soft blond hair of his lover. "What for?"

"For everything."

"It's ok to be upset. Remember when I had to cover the case of the dead girl? I wouldn't let Bianca out of my sight for weeks. Parental instincts, I guess."

Will sighed. "I just want to see my kids. I want to make sure they're alright."

"Ok, let's go. You need sleep too." Nico pulled away from the hug and placed a gentle hand on Will's lower back.

Will tried to crack a joke. "Don't get too handsy there, mister."

Nico chuckled and put his hands up in surrender. "Ok ok."

Will hurried up the stairs, impatiently waiting for Nico in front of Bianca's room.

He saw Nico's hand grab the top of the railing, so he went inside.

He tiptoed over to Bianca's bed and lightly shook her awake. "Bee! Bia! Bianca, wake up!"

Bianca rolled over. "What? What's happening?"

Will could feel his eyes full with tears again. "Nothing is happening. I'm home and wanted to see you, that's all."

Bianca sat up and wrapped her arms tightly around Will's neck. "Daddy! You're back!"

Will hugged his daughter in his arms. "Yes, yes I am." A single tear ran down his cheek, followed by many more.

Bianca pulled away and wiped the tears off of her father's face. "What's wrong?"

Will smiled and kissed her on the forehead. "Don't worry about me, it's ok."
