Will nudged the door open with his foot, holding an ice cream cake in one hand. He stopped in the hallways and shouted, "I HAVE CAKE!"
His three family members ran to greet him.
Michael stood on his tiptoes to read the writing on the icing. "Cake? Why do we have cake? It's not anyone's birthday... is it?"
Nico shook his head. "No, it's not. I didn't miss any anniversary, did I?"
Will laughed. "Nope."
Bianca pointed to the blobby writing. "What does five thousand mean?"
Nico raised an eyebrow. "Did you get a promotion?"
Will sighed. "I wish. It's for a... friend of mine."
Michael tried to open the side of the box to get a quick swipe of the icing. "Is this friend coming over to have cake?"
His father put the cake on the dining room table. "No, my friend isn't coming over. Well, she's not really a friend. She's kind of like family? She takes care of me...sometimes."
Nico grabbed plates and silverware from the kitchen. "I'm not going to ask any questions. I'm going to assume she's a goddess of some sort. You never explained what five thousand means."
Will took a fork and pointed it at his husband. "Goddess is the closest word. She's kind of always there but not at the same time. She just knows things, personal things about everyone."
Bianca nodded and passed a plate to everyone. "Cool, Dad has a goddess friend. He still didn't explain the number."
Will cleared his throat and held the knife in his hand. "Yes, right. My friend wrote a story and she reached over five thousand reads. I'm really proud of her."
He cut a slice for everyone.
"Thank you!" Michael said, eating the chocolate side first.
"Thanks." Bianca said as he received her piece.
Nico held up his hand. "We can split a slice, I just ate dinner."
Will put a slice for the both of them on a plate.
"Thank you!"
