In my everyday life, I find people, whatever their religions, hurling abuse at God and blaming their mistakes, misfortunes and suffering on God.There are also pundits who elaborate that God decides what is to happen to us. People in general are in this state of extreme ignorance. I know a Muslim gentleman and his Hindu friend, both retired government servants, who appearing to be wise indulge in purely foolish talks. The Hindu old man is often found calling meat-eating evil. The Muslim old man argues strongly in favour of meat-eating citing examples and incidents from Islamic and Christian texts which justify his arguments. Their concepts of heaven and hell are almost similar. Both believe they are going to be rewarded only after they are dead and their bodies are destroyed. Both believe they will enjoy in heaven physical comforts beyond imagination. The point of discord between them is that Allah and Sri Hari are totally different and are opposed to each other,Allah being much more powerful than Hari.Abdul Sattar can't help concluding that Lord Lord Krishna was an embodiment of licentiousness and incredible sexuality.
He would draw Raghuram Mishra's attention to how Lord Krishna enjoyed indiscriminate sex with the beautiful Gopi girls. This usually stimulated Raghuram's anger and dislike for his morning walk partner Abdul Sattar.Raghuram couldn't stop explaining to the old Muslim that Krishna's relationship with the Gopis was on a spiritual plane. Then he would elaborate on the cruel, heartless, dehumanised and denatured barbarians, brutes and savages from the Middle East who poured into India to loot her,to murder the peace loving citizens and rape and kill their wives and daughters. Or to force people to choose between Islam and death.Abdul Sattar would firmly state that they had become Muslims by choice. "Abdul Bhai, don't express your opinion publicly.People will laugh at you." I always followed the duo lightheartedly and never uttered a single word to correct them logically because I knew the average Muslim hates logic; and the average Hindu too considers it a crime to doubt anything established in this world with Sri Hari's permission.
One morning while following them and carefully listening to their talk,I put a question to Mr.Mishra,"Uncle if God is all-powerful and perfect, why has he created this world which is full of suffering and imperfect human beings?"
Both of them laughed.Raghuram said,"You are imperfect and are suffering because you did bad deeds in your past births." Mr.Sattar said,"If you don't work hard enough, who will give you joy and happiness?" My answer to Sattar was a collection of cases of people who were suffering despite their sincerity and dedication.
He asked me if I was sure those people had actually worked hard.I appreciated his rationalistic answer but when I asked why he believed that except Allah there was no other God,he was enraged and told me to shut up. Had he really seen Allah? Why did he believe every word and incident mentioned in the Quran was true...?The old Muslim gentleman turned back with eyes bulging out of their sockets. He reprimanded me and told me not to utter the name of Allah or the holy Quran in his presence again. I knew that he was an embodiment of ignorance and fanaticism who hated logic and debating. Then I turned to Raghuram who appeared to think he knew all the secrets of the universe. Raghuram told me firmly that God had created us but we were suffering because of our bad karma in our previous births. Then God,I said, could have motivated us to do good deeds because He was our supreme father. He said He always gave us suggestions and advice in His own ways but we were not wise enough to follow them all."How strange!God is all-powerful and gives us suggestions and advice in such ways that those are incomprehensible to us?"
Raghuram got thoughtful for a moment and then said,"Of course, your point deserves some consideration."
There was a momentary silence.
Eventually Raghuram said to his friend,"Abdul what kind of answer can you give this young man? He is asking very logical questions...!"
"What logical questions brother? You are talking to a man who says that he is none other than Allah..!"
I said to Abdul," Uncle, I never said,'I am Allah'.I said I am God.In this sense each and every thing is Sri Hari.Don't you always differ with your Hindu friends who claim there is no difference between Allah and Jagannath....?"Here let me tell you something interesting.Once the Sankaracharya of Puri thanked a Muslim girl named Miriam who used the word 'Bhagwan' instead of the word 'Khuda.'
I was puzzled about the Sankaracharya's ignorance and fanaticism.People like the Sankaracharya of Puri are perfect bookworms who have no interest in practice and pride themselves on their knowledge of religious texts. As regards spirituality, our Sankaracharyas are no better than the common masses.
Mr.Sattar was foaming at the mouth. He didn't say anything. He had once reproached me severely for my devotion to Sai.According to him, devotion to a pir was haram. When I had told him Sai was an incarnation of Allah,he had launched a long verbal attack on me. Except Allah no other sadhu, yogi, pir, religious scholar etc was to be venerated as God.When I asked him how he knew Allah was the greatest God,he became very cross with me.
One evening Raghuram Uncle came to my house to get some betel leaves. He was addicted to betel leaf like me.A diehard radicalised Hindu Brahmin,he attached foremost importance to the study of our religious texts. But I had not studied them.He would chide me for my ignorance of the Geeta, the vedas and the puranas.I had once gifted him some of my books. He had read one of them.He had asked me twice:"Did you have any experience with Sai or any other gods and goddesses...?"I had evaded answering. I knew he wouldn't believe a single word of my experiences though he found my spiritual writings to be curious. After 1997,after I had had the vision of Mother Kali,I started wondering at my answers to the many questions that haunted me day and night.I knew I was speaking things which only I could understand. Or someone who had gone through such horrendous times could alone be capable enough to follow me.He took the betel leaves and went home. He had however thrown a challenge at me to explain why it was wrong to think that God created us.
Although I had an argument or two with Mr.Sattar,I went to his house and invited him to attend my house warming puja with his family. Sattar strongly condemned the Modi Government and I listened to him carefully. It seemed the old man's mind was on fire.
On the day of the house warming ceremony,Mr.Sattar and his wife came to my new house. I was very glad. The man could be friendly and helpful only if you avoided topics like religion, politics, the Quran,
Prophet Mohammad and the policies of the Modi Government.
