Chapter 13~Questions~

I immediately panicked as I began to twist the doorknob harder. It turned, but the door wouldn't budge, like it was the door itself that was sealed, not the lock.

There was no way Claret knew, she couldn't. The door hadn't been locked last night. So why was it locked now? It was before curfew, so it wasn't like they locked at night. What the hell was going on?

I worried that Carmine's earlier warnings could've had some truth to them. Now I really needed to get out. But what if he didn't have an answer for this?

I quickly tucked that thought away for safekeeping.

I dug through my bag, fishing out my phone. I thanked every deity I could think of that I'd gotten his number. I scrolled through my contacts, thinking of what I could say so Claret wouldn't realize we were sneaking out.

If she already knew, we were screwed.

With my heart pounding, I dialed Carmine. Please pick up please pick up. I had the words I needed on the tip of my tongue.

Carmine picked up on the first ring, his voice expertly hide the concern I knew he felt. "Hey Ruby, I thought we were going to do some Scenario training together?" He knew something was wrong. I hoped he would understand what I was saying.

I watched my words carefully. "I was thinking we could actually do some combat training, if you wanted to swing by my room first I have some new daggers from Roth I've wanted to try." Even if no one was listening right now, I needed to buy us some time.

"Yeah, sure. I'll be by in a few." Carmine's steady voice reassured me that he'd fix this.

"Ok, see you soon." I told him before hanging up.

As I waited, I struggled with the door some more. Frustrated, I turned and kicked the couch. "Dammit."

The only thing I could do was wait for Carmine, so I did.

Not two minutes later I heard a knock. "You almost ready Ruby?" It took me a moment to realize he was keeping up the act for the hallway cameras. Shit. How were we supposed to get past those?

I placed a hand on the door, hoping he knew what he was doing. "Yeah, just let me finish putting my hair up," I said. Then quieter, so only Carmine could hear, "I'm locked in. I can't get the door open."

I heard Carmine shift his weight. "Well, while you finish putting a million pins in your hair, I'll go check the training room and make sure the stations aren't closed."

I groaned. Of course. I hadn't even thought of trying to pick the lock. I assumed by Carmine's words that he was somehow going to take care of the camera.

I darted to the bathroom, pulling out a few bobby pins and rushing back to the door. Carmine returned as I fiddled with the pins. "The camera's taken care of. Slide a few pins under the door."

I did as he said, thinking about how much trouble we were going to be in if Claret figured out what we were doing tonight. I was seriously freaked out about this entire thing, and I hoped Carmine had answers.

Is this worth it? Was I doing the right thing?

A sudden click from Carmine's side of the door made me jump back, and the door was yanked open.

Before I could move forward, Carmine was pulling me to him. "We are getting the hell out of here. Now."

I couldn't exactly disagree with him at this point. I clutched my bag, following his quick strides. "You better have answers for this."
