The worst feeling is the moment you realize you lost yourself.

Chapter 39~The Worst Moment~

I let out a breath, both furious and grateful for the voice on the other end of my comm.

"Kitler! What the hell is going on? How'd you hack into my comm?" I hissed quietly. A million questions were zipping through my head. What was he talking about? Had Claret realized we were here? I glanced back, but Ginger wasn't anywhere in sight. She had to still be searching for the supplies, because there wasn't any other way out of this room.

"I will not tell you anything until you are alone, Ms. Gray," his voice crackled like static in my ear. "Make your way to the second lab room from the back. Lock the door once you're inside, if you will."

My heart started racing and adrenaline released into my system, but I followed his instructions apprehensively. "I'm alone now, what do you want? Were you the one that cleared the towers?"

I heard a cough in the comm. Somehow I knew Kitler had blocked my communication with the others. I had a moment of blind fury before he began talking. "Have you ever considered. . ." he paused, and it seemed like he was choosing his words very carefully. "-how blissfully ignorant you are, Ruby Gray?"

My stomach dropped to my feet, and I swallowed, my throat suddenly too dry to speak. Was he helping Claret?. "W-what are you insinuating Kitler? Did you help us, or not?"

He made a dismissive noise, "Yes, yes that was wonderful thinking on my part, clearing the towers so efficiently, and the cameras. Goodness do you realize. . ." he paused, "Terribly sorry, I digress." He took a beath, "My dear, you aren't asking the right questions right now. Your blindness is going to cost you very soon."

I spun, looking around wildly, but there was nothing else in this room with me, save for a lab table covered in boxes, and some chemistry equipment. Then I realized he didn't mean literally. "Dammit! Quit talking in riddles and tell me what you know already!"

Kitler sighed, his voice tinged with sadness, and. . . regret. "Sometimes, it's the people you know the most, that you should trust the least, Ruby."

Oh God, no. He couldn't mean what I thought he meant. "What?"

But the comm was silent.

Kitler was gone.

I cursed wildly, fumbling for the door. My thoughts raced, who was it? Who was Kitler trying to warn me about? I had to find Carmine. As much as I hated to think it, my team was at the top of my list. They'd been under Claret's influence while I was gone, and we never had figured out if any of them had helped drug me.

My hand connected with the doorknob, and I yanked the door open.

And came face to face with Ginger.

"Jesus Ruby! You scared the hell out of me! I thought you were gone." She glanced behind me, "Why were you in one of the labs?"

I glanced behind me, a brief flash of fear shooting through me. Was it her? Was she the mole? But that thought quickly disappeared. I'd never had any reason to suspect her, or seen her act strange, it wasn't possible.

I grabbed her arm, "We need to leave! We need to get the others and-"

Her hand darted out, sweeping aside my hair. I felt a pinch, and my eyes widened as I watched her pull back, a sedative glistening in her hand.

Fear and something else threatened to drag me to my knees. "You-you. . ." Of course it was her, she'd been my roommate. She would've had access to my food, and the drugs. All those time she brought me food. . .
