Felled in the night by the ones you think you love, they will come for you.

Chapter 25~They Will Come~

What kind of game are they playing at? It was the only thing I could think as my eyes scanned behind us for the Hummers. I thought they might've fallen behind in the traffic, but they were simply gone.

Shani twisted around, "Dammit. Check her team, they've probably got trackers on them."

I was already listening to her, knowing that was the only possible way they would have let us escape so easily, but Kat interrupted, "I already did, they're clean. There's nothing on any of them. I took their comms too."

"A mole, then." Carmine said, and my eyes jerked over to his.

"No, none of my team would do that," I immediately disagreed, but his words had planted a seed of doubt in my head. Would they? Would one of them rat us out to Claret if given the chance?

Adam had been angry and upset with me, but I couldn't believe that he would ever do that to me. Scarlett was too much of a follower to go against my team, and Phoenix was smart enough to know when something was true. Ginger on the other hand, she was a rebel at heart, and anything that allowed her to give the system the metaphorical middle finger, well she wouldn't be in a huge hurry to go back to Claret anytime in the near future. As soon as we explained the truth to them, I knew they would see our side of things.

Cas narrowed his eyes at me in the mirror. "You have a better explanation for why they quit Hunting us? We're rogues, less than wolves in their eyes. There's no way in hell they just gave up when they were that close."

"I don't know," I conceded, "but they don't have trackers or comms, and they're unconscious. None of them can do much right now."

"Goody," Cas told me sarcastically, "so now I get to sleep with one eye open and watch for a knife in my back?"

I frowned. "No, I-"

"We'll settle this when we get back to Ohio," Carmine interrupted me. "None of them will be left unattended until we know where their loyalties lie."

I knew these next few days were going to be tense as we continued to drive. Each of us was going to need to trust the others; something that was difficult to come by at the moment.

"They're going to be Hunting for us even more now," Kat said after awhile. "Regardless of why they quit for now, it's going to get extremely dangerous. Eventually, they'll come for us with everything they've got."

Cas laughed sharply, "And what was that back there? A walk in the park? I don't know about you, but I will not be repeating that in the future."

Kat flushed red and before I could say something she replied evenly, "I was just trying to point something out, asshat."

I glanced at Carmine, raising a brow in curiosity at the sudden tension between the two of them. Kat had always struck me as a shy and reserved girl. The words coming out of her mouth didn't match her personality.

"Asshat?" Cas asked sardonically, "What are you, fifteen?"

Kat smiled tightly in response to his words, "my mistake, dog."

Well that was a new one.

The sharp intake of breath from the driver's seat told me the words had had the intended effect. Carmine shook his head at me as he rolled his eyes, mouthing later.

The remainder of the car ride consisted of Cas repeatedly telling Kat that he wasn't a dog, and Kat responding with another thinly veiled insult.

When we hit the Ohio border around midnight, I finally allowed myself to relax. I'd still had that fear that Red was waiting to ambush us, and that our luck had run out. But we were-for the most part-the only vehicle on the road, and the trip back to the safe house seemed to fly by.
