Chapter 8~A Single Lie~
Phoenix, Ginger, Carmine, and I found ourselves in the lower level Tech lab after a late lunch. Claret had told us that Roth had some new tech that would help tonight.
"You'll be across the street from Chaos," Roth explained as he led us toward the storage area, "in the Metropolitan Tower." He paused for a moment as I fidgeted. I already knew most of the details, and I desperately wanted to find Adam.
"The Chase Bank is having a business party tonight in the fiftieth floor dining room. The club on the fifty-seventh floor will also be open. Our Runners aren't sure exactly where the meeting will be held, but there will be extra security measures on the other floors. So it's safe to assume the wolves will be on one of those two levels." He finally led us to the storage area, and my eyes scanned the shelves of tech.
Comms, GPS, new experimental Scen contacts, and tons of other new tech lined the walls. I briefly wondered what he had for us tonight.
I still couldn't believe that Adam wasn't going to be a part of this Hunt. It felt wrong, and part of me didn't think I could be completely comfortable with Carmine. There were still too many secrets between us.
It frustrated me that he wouldn't tell me what he knew. If he was telling the truth, and I really didn't remember my past correctly, then I deserved to know why. I promised myself I would find out, with or without Carmine's help.
Carmine elbowed me, pulling me away from my thoughts. "What's wrong?" He asked quietly as Roth explained something to Phoenix and Ginger.
I shook my head, knowing that if I spoke, it would just make me angrier. I turned my attention back to Roth, ignoring the frown on Carmine's face.
"Tonight will be considerably more difficult than your Hunt at Chaos. The wolves will be harder to track down in the Tower with all of the humans there. You also need to make sure they don't cause a scene. I have some new Comms and Contacts that will help you." Roth moved his hand along one of the lower shelves, pulling out four small black cases and four green contact cases. "The Comms will obviously allow you to communicate while separated. The Contacts can access the GPS system in the Comm and overlay an infrared grid on your vision. The wolves should register with slightly higher temperatures than the humans, which will make them easier to locate."
My eyebrows rose slightly. As far as I'd known, the infrared overlay had still been in the experimental stage. Roth must've had Harkin help him these past few days. Tech like this took a while to develop.
Roth handed each of us a Comm and contact case. "Make sure you don't remove your Comm without first deactivating you contacts, or you contacts will switch to the nearest GPS system. Then you might find yourself looking at a map of the Chase Tower." He warned before showing us how to deactivate our contacts and Comms.
Afterwards, Roth gave us one last set of instructions. "Make sure you dress for the business party. You'll need to act like you've been invited, like you belong there." He looked at Carmine and me. "Have you read the layout?"
I nodded tersely. Not only was Adam not coming, but Carmine was to pose as my boyfriend, and I as the daughter of an investor that had a lot of stock in the bank. Ginger and Phoenix would be checking the club first.
The longer I thought about it, the more this situation gave me a bad feeling. Four agents alone were not enough to take on two wolves, and splitting up our team made me even more on edge. Something was up.
