Six years ago, when Namaari was just a young tween, the Fang clan was visiting Heart with all the other clans for a peace meeting, although they still didn't trust each other when the last dragon disappeared. That was when she met Raya before she became a traitor to Kumandra. Raya had noticed Namaari was wearing a necklace with the dragon shaped pendant."Is that Sisu?" Raya asked, pointing at it. Then she caught herself. "Sorry, um, yeah, I might be a little bit of a dragon nerd."
Namaari smiled. "Hey, I'm the one wearing the Sisu fan necklace."
Raya returned the smile. Right then, she decided she liked the princess. "Come on. Have you eaten yet?"
Side by side, the new friends walked across the bridge. Watching them, Chief Benja smiled with pride. The sight of the two girls together seemed to pacify the other adults, as a sign from the chiefs the warriors lowered their swords. The clans followed their leaders across the bridge.
Awaiting them was a celebration like none Namaari had ever seen. The great hall of the Heart Palace had been decorated with fresh flowers and silk curtains. The tables were piled high with rice cakes, dumplings, spring rolls, buns, fruit, and other good things to eat. A band played lively music. Yet for all the festive trappings, the atmosphere was tense. The chiefs stood apart, eyeing one another suspiciously.
Only Namaari and Raya were having fun. They sat at the edge of the room with Tuk Tuk, Raya's pet, each holding a plate of snacks. I was only six when I was at Heart and too busy playing with my stuffed doll.
"Seriously? Your mom actually said that? Awkward. Okay, next question. Hand-to-hand or swords?" Raya asked.
"Blades all day," answered Namaari.
"Right?" Raya said, giving Namaari the Kumandran fist bump. It was Namaari's turn to ask a question. "Okay, dressy or casual?"
"Only a monster would choose to wear this outfit on the regular. Uh, rice or stew?"
To Raya's surprise, Namaari hesitated. "I didn't think that'd stump you."
"Uh... This is actually one of the first times I've had rice in a while," Namaari admitted.
"Really?" Raya asked.
"Fang may look nice on the outside," Namaari explained. "But we have some pretty big holes on the inside. Sorry. Didn't mean to bring it down. So, where were we? We both have single parents who are terrible at telling jokes. We're both warrior women who despise uncomfortable formal wear."
"And we're both Sisu superfans."
Namaari lowered her voice. "Yeah. You know, Fang legend says she's still out there."
Raya's eyes grew wide, "Sisu? You're kidding, right?"
Namaari glanced around to make sure no one was looking. From a foul in her tunic, she withdrew an ancient manuscript, covered with a intricate design. Raya tells from the way Namaari held it that it was very old and very special. "Wanna see something?"
"Are you supposed to have that?" Raya whispered.
Namaari laughed. "No," she said, as if it was obvious. "According to this, after the Mighty Sisu blasted away all the Druun, she fell into the water and floated downstream," Namaari explained. "Legends say she's now sleeping at the river's end."
Carefully, she unfolded the fragile palm leaves that made up the manuscript. Raya could tell it was a scene depicting Sisu and the Druun. She smiled and petted Tuk Tuk on his shell as he sniffed the manuscript.
