It’s finally Friday and my first week at work is almost over. I can’t believe I’ve been working here for a week now. But starting next week, I’m only going to come twice a week - Thursdays and Fridays - because college is starting again. I mentioned it to him, but he didn’t seem to care. Well, why would he? I’m just an intern who shouldn’t speak up to the boss.
Speaking of speaking up, that hasn’t happened again. After what happened on Monday, Mr. Grey has been giving me a dark stare. He gives me little work, and keeps reminding me to not doubt his decisions, and I always give him a weak smile to let him know I won’t repeat that mistake again.
As I was going through some documents Mr. Grey sent, my phone rang. Not my work phone, but my cell. Turning my head to check if anyone’s looking, I noticed the coast was clear, and I quickly picked up my cell phone.
“Hey MacKayla!” the girl on the other end chirped. I knew who was calling immediately. Even though the number didn’t appear on my caller ID, I couldn’t ever forget the voice of my best friend, Jade Macari. We grew up together and were basically sisters from another mother. And we went to the same college and were roommates! It was great to hear her voice again. She went back home to New York to visit her family during break, while I was at my new job.
“Hey Jade!” I chirped back, but softly.
“Why are you so quiet?”
“I’m at work” I checked to see if anyone noticed I was on my phone, and luckily, no one did. Tiffany was typing something away, and Mr. Grey’s office doors were shut. I wonder what the devil did in his office the entire day.
“Oh! You got it? Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Well, I tried. But you were across the country! And you forgot your cell with me”
“Oh right” she let out a small giggle. “Sorry about that. I guess I forgot to take that with me”
“Yeah...forgot!” sarcasm echoed in my voice.
“Hey! I said I’m sorry!”
“I know, I know, and I forgive you”
“Good. So how’s your dream job?”
“Uh...it’s fine. It’s just been a week”
“Any hot guys?”
“Jade!” I hissed. “This is work, not some party!”
“But you don’t even go to those parties”
“And you know exactly why”
“I still don’t understand your reasoning. Like, seriously. If you ever go to those parties, you’ll be swept off your feet in seconds”
“But I don’t wanna be swept off my feet from a guy who’s wasted. He probably has those beer goggles on; that’s why he would sweep me off my feet. Or, he’ll be swept off of his feet if he has a bit too much to drink” I chuckled, and she joined.
“But seriously, are you still waiting for your knight in shining armor?”
“I don’t know who I’m looking for anymore. All I want right now is to get through college and focus on work”
“Well, don’t worry because we’ll be graduating in no time”
She was true. We only had two more months of college left, then we be through the gates and off to our future, which I was sitting in right now.
“MacKayla?”
“Yeah?”
“I’m coming home today, but I don’t have my keys”
I let out a small chuckle escape my mouth before continuing, “Where are you right now?”
“At the airport”
“I’ll give you the address to here. You can come by and I’ll give you the keys, okay?”
“Cool. Thanks MacKayla! Love you!”
“Love you more!” and with that I hung up my phone and noticed a silhouette above me. When I brought my face up, I noticed I was in a deep shit of trouble.
