The meeting yesterday was so awkward. I was sitting next to Chris and he kept staring at me as I took some notes. He wouldn’t take his eyes off of me, and I didn’t dare look at him. I knew if I did, I wouldn’t be able to control my emotions. And when the meeting was over, he walked over to his office, and I was left alone at my desk.

Even though I didn’t want to talk to him, I didn’t want him to ignore me either. He just didn’t want to talk to me. He wanted a professional, business relationship, but I wanted more.

Today’s Friday, the last day at work for my second week. Chris hasn’t sent any emails. Neither has he come out to say hello. I don’t even know if he’s in his office. Tiffany’s been typing away on her computer, and I’m working on the project. It’s due in a week, and I need to prep for everything. Since one of my designs is part of the project, I need to be extra careful of what else to incorporate into the presentation because this time I’ll be speaking about it.

As I was typing away on my laptop for the project, I noticed a silhouette appear in front of me, leaning on my table. I looked up, hoping to see Chris, but it turned out to be a woman. She was in her mid-thirties, and wore a nice red ruffled top and black slacks.

“Hi, I’m looking for Chris Grey” she spoke gently.

“He should be in his office”

“Can I just go in?”

“You can ask his secretary, Tiffany” I pointed to Tiffany.

“Oh, thank you” she walked over to Tiffany and asked her the same question. Tiffany picked up the phone, probably to call Grey, and as soon as she put her phone down, Grey walked out of his office. He was wearing a black suit with a white collared shirt and a black tie.

“Caroline!” he greeted the woman, as he planted a kiss on her cheek.

“Chris! How are you?” she planted a kiss on both his cheeks as her hands rested on his arms.

“I’m fine. I was just waiting for you”

“Well, I’m here. Wanna go?”

Where are they going? Who is she?

“Sure” I noticed him glance my way and I quickly stopped myself from staring at him. “Just one sec”

He walked over to my desk and cleared his throat. I looked up to see him with a straight line on his face.

“Ms. Jackson. I emailed you some documents. Can you fix them up and make sure they’re perfect?”

“Of course sir”

His expression didn’t change, and he walked away from my desk and back to that woman. She linked arms with him and they walked to the elevator.

Maybe that’s his girlfriend. Maybe that’s why he won’t be with me.

I felt my eyes become watery, and before the tears could escape, I ran past the elevator and to the restrooms. Unfortunately, Grey and that woman didn’t enter the elevator, and I noticed Grey glance at me as I dashed into the ladies’ room.

I walked over to the sink and noticed my eyes were red and puffy, while my cheeks were wet from the tears that escaped. My skin lost all its color and my hair was dry and hanging. I noticed the door knob twist and turn, and in came Grey. His expression was blank, just like it was at my desk, but after he took a glance towards my face, his expression softened.

“MacKayla?” his tone was soft as he walked behind me, as he placed his hands on my shoulder.

I didn’t reply. Instead, I let out a quiet sob and my body started shaking.

“Is everything alright?” He broke my heart, and he’s asking if I’m okay? Does he not see me breaking apart right in front of him?

“MacKayla, talk to me” his voice rose a bit more.

“No! I’m not alright!” I snapped at him. I didn’t turn around, but I was staring back at him from the mirror. I held onto the sink counter as support because I knew if I were to let go, I wouldn’t be able to hold still.

“What happened?”

“You!” I yelled back. He removed his hands from my shoulders and stepped back.

“What did I do?”

“You kissed me, told me it was a mistake. Kissed me again, told me it wasn’t a mistake. Then while we were talking about it, you said it’s a mistake. How could you just do that? Why did you kiss me in the first place? Do you only care about yourself? Are you really that selfish?” I snapped at him as my voice rose, and we were face to face.

His look changed from soft to hate to love. He was processing what I just said, and slowly put his hand back on my shoulder. “I’m sorry” he spoke softly.

He leaned down so we were eye level. “I shouldn’t have said that. It’s just your my intern, and you deserve better”

I shook my head, disagreeing with him and trying to fight back my tears. “No, I don’t” I looked up at him to notice him take in my words. His eyes became wide as I continued, “I only want you Chris”. I took his hand in mine and laced our fingers together. Staring at how perfect our hands were, I felt a spark come between us and my breath hitched.

“You don’t know what you’re saying MacKayla”

“I don’t care” I looked up at him, “because all I want is you, and I know you want me too. Chris, please”

I felt the tears slip out of my eyes as my cheeks became wet.

“Don’t cry” he placed his thumbs on my cheeks and wiped away the tears.

I shook my head, “Why are you here then Chris? If you only wanted a normal, business, professional relationship, why are you here?”

He ran his hand through his hair and shut his eyes. When he opened them, they were filled with confusion. “I don’t know”

As he said that, he backed away from me and walked out of the restroom, leaving me alone once again.
