You stare at your lunch with great disappointment. Again, your mom has packed you the same old peanutbutter and jelly sandwich. Gross.
You push your food to the side, as your stomach grumbles. Your parents never let you get food from the cafeteria. They say it's full of fat and too many carbs. It makes you look nerdy, just like the rest of your appearance.
Your thick glasses cover quite a bit of your face. In eight grade, most kids wore contacts. But like usual, your parents were finding excuses so they could save their money.
Pushing away the strands of your curly hair, you head to the trashcan to throw away your disgusting food. As the sandwich falls with a thump to the bottom of the bin, three girls and a boy come walking towards you with grins on their smug faces.
"Hello nerdy little Y/N." Samantha says with sarcasm. She looks at you, looking sorry with a twist of sarcasm. "Hope your not eating mommy's food again."
The four kids laugh mercilessly. To the cool kids they're known as the funtastic four. Yes. Funtastic. To the kids they bully? All they're known as is The Meanies.
Nobody ever stands up for you. It's like a thing that nobody has ever heard of before. Y/N Winters being stood up for? 100% not cool and unheard of. That's why it's a surprise when somebody comes to your rescue.
A boy, just a smidge taller than you steps up from a table nearby. His hair is long and floppy, falling in front of his eyes a bit. And his eyes . . . the most beautiful eyes you've ever seen. Hazel with a tint of light green.
"Shut up." He says, standing in front of you.
The boy, Derrick, who was also bullying you, steps up. "Make me." He demanded. He pushed the boy enough to stumble. But he quickly picked himself back up.
Now that things had gotten interesting, the whole cafeteria was now staring at what was going on. You blush and try to walk away. But Samantha pushes you back.
"Oh! We're not done with you yet honey!" She says, as if she cares a bit about you.
"Yes you are." The boy who stood up for you argues. "Go." he tells you.
"SHUT YOUR STUPID MOUTH UP, JACOB!" Derrick yells at him. "IF WE SAY WE'RE NOT DONE, THEN WE'RE NOT DONE."
"Ohhhhhh!" mummers the audience of students who have gathered closer to the fight. Everyone is at the edge of their seats. You're surprised the teachers in the corner haven't noticed. But like usual, they're so absorbed in talking to each other about books to care.
"Then I'll make you be done!" Jacob screams back. The teachers whirl around to stare. Jacob swings his arm around, about to hit Derrick. But before he get's his hand halfway there, a hand grabs his wrist.
"No more fighting in the cafeteria." says a teacher (who you don't know). "That will be enough gentlemen. Go now."
Samantha and her friends glare at you and Jacob before turning on their heals and storming away. This is the first battle you've won against those snooty little idiots in a long time. But again - you hadn't won it. Jacob had.
"Thanks." You whisper to him as you head back to your table. All he does is smile. At his table, he talks with his friends. But every once and a while he looks back at you. When he notices you seeing that, he turns back quickly. Maybe he likes you? No. Nobody has ever liked you.
But just in case, at the end of your school day, you quickly follow him to his locker. When he leaves you slip a small paper in one of the cracks. And on it? Your number.
