My brown hair was hanging in waves of curls with a small hair clip pinned to the side, and I wore a black and white polka dot smock dress with a black cardigan and white converse shoes. I applied some eye liner to my eyelids, blush on my cheeks and a clear gloss to my lips. My mom always pushed me to dress well.

"First impressions matter, Alaya; you are a reflection of your father and me," I thought to myself as I took one last look in the mirror before reaching for my rucksack and descended down the stairs.

"Mum, I'm not going to be late," I protested, rolling my eyes. "I'm going to get the 7.50 a.m. bus, which will get me to campus in 40 minutes, and I'll still have 20 minutes before the tour begins."

I grabbed the tiny lunch box from my mum's hands and kissed her on the cheek. "Wish me luck, love you," I said to my mum as I walked out the front door.

Here goes I thought to myself.....
