When Black Canary left the room, the Team walked over to me.
"Great job, Beautiful," Kidflash said and winked. Artemis elbowed him, then turned to me with a small smile.
"Nice moves," she said, and I nodded, smiling at the praise.
"Welcome to the team," Aqualad said. Superboy nodded to me and pursed his lips, which was probably the closest thing to a smile I would get from him. Miss Martian walked up beside me and smiled largely.
"We need to take you shopping," she declared, "You only have one pair of clothes."
"That's really nice of you, " I said politely, "But I don't have any money."
"We'll take care of that," Robin said and handed me a credit card. I stared at it, shocked that they would give me a credit card.
"How much is on it?" I asked. Robin shook his head.
"Don't worry about that," he said.
"Come with us," Miss Martian said, looking at Artemis, Zatanna, and Rocket.
"I think I'll skip on this one," Artemis said, "Shopping isn't really my thing."
"Please," Miss Martian said hopefully.
"I'll go if Rocket and Arty do too," Zatanna said.
"Come on guys, let's go," Rocket said, "Do you have something better to do?"
Artemis sighed, then looked to Zatanna, who nodded.
"We'll go," Artemis said. Kidflash sauntered over with a smirk on his face.
"Can I come to?" he asked flirtatiously. Artemis rolled her eyes.
"This is a girl's thing," Rocket said.
"Then I guess we have to let Baywatch come," Artemis said. Zatanna, Rocket, and Artemis snickered, and I cracked a grin. Miss Martian looked like she wanted to laugh, but thought it might be mean to. Kidflash walked away, looking slightly defeated, but his head was still held high.
"Let's go," Miss Martian said, and walked over to the Zeta Tube. We all followed her there. It announced her leaving, and she was teleported away. One by one Rocket, Zatanna, and Artemis left. I had already been through the Zeta Tube when I came to Mount Justice, and the sensation was very strange. For a second, you don't feel anything. Actually, you don't feel like anything. The electronic voice announced that I was leaving. and a moment later I was standing in Happy Harbor. When I looked behind me, I saw Mount Justice a mile or so away. When I looked over to Miss Martian, I saw her transforming. Her skin turned to around the shade of Zatanna's skin. She was now wearing different clothes too, so she now looked like a regular civilian.
The other girls were already dressed like civilians, so we started to make our way to the Happy Harbor Mall. When we got there, I was amazed by the size of it. And when we walked in, I felt like a little kid at a candy store. I wonder what candy actually taste like, I thought to myself. Father never let me have any candy. Miss Martian grabbed my arm, tearing me away from my thoughts. She started to lead the other girls and me to a clothes shop. Once we were inside, I saw rows and rows of vibrant colors. Lime green tank tops, bright white shorty shorts.
"Take as long as you want," Miss Martian said nicely. I shuffled on my feet.
"Can we go to another store?" I asked, trying not to come off as picky or ungrateful.
"What's wrong with this one?" Zatanna asked. I shrugged.
"It's just not really my style," I said.
"What is your style then?" Rocket asked. I thought about the question. Honestly, I didn't really know. I usually wore workout clothes, and since I'd never been out in public before the clothes I was wearing at the time were the only civilian clothes I had ever worn. But I liked them. They were simple. Just a dark red T-shirt and some jeans.
"Casual," I finally answered, "But comfy."
"There's a shop like that on the second floor," Artemis said, then we all followed her to the store.
I liked this store a lot better. It still had neon colored clothes and things like that, but it had a variety too. I walked over to a clothing rack that had different colored T-shirts. After a second of scanning the colors, I picked out a few solid colored shirts. When I looked around, I saw that the other girls were crowded around a rack of shirts, laughing. I walked over to see what was so funny. Zatanna was holding up a black shirt with the Batman signal on it.
"You should get that for Robin," Artemis joked. Zatanna smiled.
"We should get two, and give one to Batman," Rocket added, which made the girls laugh again. I smirked at their silliness, then walked off to get some pants and pajamas.
Part of me wanted to walk over to them. It wanted to join in on the laughter, it wanted to be friends with them. I shook my head to get rid of the thought. Father said to not get attached. But it couldn't hurt to be friends with them, could it? I mean, obviously I wouldn't get too close. I would be careful. But I'd just mess it up, I thought. Father said I always messed things up. He probably only gave me this mission in hopes that I would get killed. But I guess if he wanted me dead, he'd just do it himself.
"Alex," Miss Martian called from across the store. I power-walked over, carrying the small stack of clothes I had picked out. Along with shirts, pants, and pajamas, I bought a jacket with a black torso and white sleeves. "You can get more if you want to," Miss Martian said.
"No, it's fine," I answered politely. We went to the check out line, and I used the credit card to buy the clothes. The moment we walked out of the store, Miss Martian face-palmed.
"Hello Megan!" she exclaimed, "We need to buy you shoes."
"Who's Megan?" I asked.
"Oh, Megan is my real name," Miss Martian said, then paused, "Well my real name is actually M'gann, but Megan is more Earth-like."
"But we do need to buy you shoes," Artemis said, "Do you like a certain type?"
"Um," I thought about it, "Converse. Black and white."
"You should also get some shoes for training," Zatanna suggested. I nodded. We then walked to the shoe store, which was just around the next corner. I found some black and white hight-top converse, and some gray, blue, and purple Nike's. After we bought the shoes, the stack in my arms now almost covered my face.
"Do you need help?" M'gann asked.
"No," I said. I couldn't let them help me, I had to show them I didn't need help. Despite my answer, M'gann took a shoe box off of the pile in my hands. Before I could say anything, Artemis took the other one. Then Zatanna and Rocket took almost all the clothes I had bought, leaving me with only my jacket in my hands.
"You might want to put that jacket on," Rocket suggested, smirking slightly, "It's a little chilly."
I was about to snap at them about how I didn't want nor need their help, but then I realized that they were just being friendly. And they didn't see things the way I saw them. For them, asking for help wasn't a sign of weakness. I smiled and put on my new jacket.
"Thanks," I said.
