I went straight to my room and turned on my wrist communicator.
"Honey Bun?" I was surprised when my mom answered in her heavy accent.
"Mom?"
"Sweety!" she shrieked happily, "Your uncle has been hogging the communicator. How are you?"
"Fine," I answered, "Listen, something weird happened."
"What's wrong Honey Bun?"
"I got this strange vision when I touched Robin," I said, "It's like I was in the vision. And these people died and I felt so sad but I don't even know who they were!"
"I'll tell Snookums," Mom said after a moment. She was referring to Father.
"Can you not?" I asked tentatively.
"Why?" she asked, shocked.
"Just not until I find out more, okay? I don't want him knowing I can't control it," I said, "Maybe ask one of your friends with powers?" I suggested.
"Maybe," Mom said. "Gotta go, Darling, call me later!"
"Bye Mom," I said, but she had already hung up. At times, I liked my mom. She was definitely nicer than Father and Uncle, and all of her friends adored me. But other times she was insensitive, and it was really awkward when she flirted with Father in front of me.
I sighed. What's going on? I wondered. I had just gotten the hang of my mimicking powers, and now I have to deal with random visions? And where did it even come from? The powers, and what happened in that vision? Was it a memory from the past, or a glimpse of the future? And whatever it was, it had something to do with Robin. But he wasn't even in the vision. Unless I was seeing things through his eyes. Somehow that worsened the already bad situation.
I peeked at my wrist communicator watch and saw that it was almost time for dinner. M'gann had told me that we were going out for dinner, as a sort of initiation thing. And honestly, I was excited. I was beginning to feel like I had belonged. Which is going to make betraying them that much harder. I shook my head to get rid of those thoughts. Then I shrugged my jacket on and headed out the door. When I got to the main room, I saw everyone else on the team there in their civvies. M'gann smiled at me brightly.
"Hey Alex!" she said. I sent a small smile her way. Wally walked up beside me.
"Ready for our date, Babe?" he asked me.
"Our date," I started skeptically, "With the rest of the team?"
"They begged to come along," Wally told me, "Wanted to see the Wall-Man on full blast."
"Of course," I laughed.
"Can we go?" Artemis asked. I detected something in her voice. Was she jealous?
"You may go first, Alex," Aqualad told me.
"Thanks, Aqualad," I nodded to him.
"Please, call me Kaldur," he said. Score, I thought to myself. I had the first names of almost everyone on the team. I went through the zeta tube and then found myself in Happy Harbor. It looked like I was behind some building, standing next to a blue telephone box, which was the zeta tube in disguise. A moment later, everyone else on the team was standing with me.
"Where are we going?" I asked politely.
"Well," Zatanna said and smiled," You didn't seem to like incredibly fancy things, so we decided to take you to a pretty casual restaurant."
"One of the most popular joints here," Wally added. The Team started to lead me away from the back of the building and onto the main sidewalk. We walked a few blocks down until we stopped in front of a restaurant. Above the doorway in flashing lights were the words Tom's Diner. Kaldur opened the door for us and we each went in. The place smelled like burgers, and I could faintly hear music playing. It was set up like an old-fashioned restaurant, with red booths and a counter. Superboy walked up the guy at the counter, who looked no older than sixteen.
"Table for nine?" he requested with little emotion. The employee nodded and began to lead us towards the back, where a long table was set up. He started placing down the menus in our spots.
"Ring the bell when you're ready to order," the employee said lazily, then walked back to his place behind the counter. Wally immediately picked up the metal bell set on the table and began ringing it rapidly. The guy from the counter sent Wally an icy glare. Robin smirked slightly and elbowed Wally. Artemis rolled her eyes, while Zatanna and Rocket laughed at his antics. We then sat down, and I ended up next to M'gann. All of us ordered burgers, which Wally claimed were 'the bomb'. When I took the first bite of my meal, I immediately understood why. To be fair, that was the first burger I had ever had, so I couldn't compare it to anything, but still. My meals usually consisted of yogurt, granola bars, fruits, and vegetables. So that burger was seriously from heaven. I got so into the burger, that I was shocked when someone started speaking to me.
"Nice watch," Robin commented, pointing to my communicator. I held up my finger, indicating to him that I needed a second. I swallowed my burger very unladylike.
"Thanks, it was from my dad," I said, partially true. They always say the best lies start with the truth.
"Looks expensive. Where did he work?" Robin asked, and I suddenly got suspicious. Why was he interested? The thought arose that he might suspect that it wasn't a normal watch, but I told myself that there was no way for him to know. Or was there?
"Office job," I answered, "Took him forever to get the money for this."
"He must have loved you a lot," M'gann said sympathetically. I shrugged.
"He was never around," I said, also true.
"I can relate to that," Superboy muttered.
"Some dads don't have to be around to show they love you," M'gann said, seemingly to both Superboy and I. I supposed Superboy was talking about Superman when he said 'dad'.
"I guess," Superboy grumbled. I settled for an understanding nod.
Thankfully, our daddy issues took the spotlight away from my watch. We moved on to lighter topics, and pretty soon the whole table was laughing along to some joke that Wally was making. But I could've sworn I caught Robin looking at my watch more than a few times.
(A/N) I just wanted to say that it's super hard for me to have everyone actively be a part of the conversation since there is seriously nine people. So I'm super sorry that like only four people actually get to talk often. And I honestly don't know Rocket and Zatanna like, at all. So yeah, sorry about that. Plus, apologies that almost all of my chapters so far have been fillers, I have to lead up to the good stuff!
