Fake Tutor

A while after I had designed my outfit Black Canary showed up at the Mountain. I was a little happy for the company since everyone else had left to go home or something like that.

"Hey, how have you been so far?" Black Canary asked. The genuine care in her voice took me aback. I was sure not to show my surprise.

"Fine, everyone's been really nice," I answered politely.

"We have some matters to discuss," Black Canary said slowly.

"Like what?" I asked, though I already had an idea of what she meant.

"So you have no family that will take you in?" Canary cut to the point.

"None that I know of," I lied. How long can I keep this charade up?

"Well, don't worry. You are always welcome to stay at Mount Justice."

"Thank you."

"So you lived in Gotham with your parents?"

"Yes," I answered. Which was actually true.

"What school did you go to?"

"I was homeschooled," I said truthfully. My mom actually taught me.

"We will need to enroll you in a school," Canary said, "Preferably in Happy Harbor."

"But I've never been to a public school," I tried to sound nervous. This was bad. I doubt Father would want me to go to school. It would take time away from the mission! However, I would like to go to school. And Father would never find out...right? But he would be furious if he did. Not worth the risk. "Maybe I could find a tutor?"

"That could work," Canary contemplated.

"I know where to find one," I offered, "I can go now."

"Sure," she said, "But if you don't find one today I'll do it, okay?"

"Yeah," I said and nodded, quickly walking to the zeta tube and transporting away.

I took a deep breath in.

"Home sweet home," I muttered after gagging from the stench of Gotham. I don't know why I liked the place. But it's where I grew up. Sure, my childhood was horrible, but Gotham is the only place I know. I started walking towards my Aunts apartment. All I had to do to trick Black Canary was to make some fake papers and have my Aunt sign them using an alias. Maybe I could make a website as a little 'cherry on top'. After a short while, I was at her apartment. I climbed up the fire escape to the top floor, and knocked loudly on her window, hoping she was home. My Aunt moved the curtain slightly to see who it was. After seeing it was me, she opened her window.

"Hey Julia," she said as I came into her apartment. "What brings you here?"

"I need you to sign some papers."

"For what?" she answered warily.

"A fake signature," I said, "I'm trying to fake having a tutor so I don't have to go to school."

"Part of your mission?"

"Yes. Can I use your computer to make some papers?"

"Go ahead. I'll get you some milk," my aunt said and went into her kitchen. I inspected her apartment, which was filled with extravagant jewels and beautiful pieces of art. All of them stolen, of course. When my aunt returned with the milk she led me to her emerald-encrusted laptop. After a few minutes of typing, I had some very official looking papers. I printed them out and had my aunt sign them. When I checked to see what she had called herself, I made out Sasha King.

"Thanks," I told her and made my way back down her fire escape.

I could tell from the look on Black Canary's face that she was surprised I had found a tutor. Come to think of it, she probably just wanted me to get out of the Mountain for a little bit.

"Where did you find a tutor?" Canary asked.

"I found her online. She's in Gotham," I answered. "I can show you her website if you want."

"No, it's fine," Canary shook her head in disbelief, "Well these papers seem real. When do you start? Do you have to go to Gotham every day?"

"I can start tomorrow. And I'll meet her at the Gotham Cafe. Don't worry, it's not in the bad part of Gotham," I answered smoothly.

"I'm impressed. Good job," Canary said and walked away to further examine the papers.

Well, now I have thirty-five hours a week to do whatever I wanted.
