Just as quickly as the feeling came, it was gone. I could see again, but my breathing was rapid. How could I have not noticed? How stupid am I? His voice, his face, his behavior?
Dick was Robin.
"You," I whispered.
"What?" Dick asked, raising an eyebrow at me.
"Robin," I muttered, my voice filling with venom. I pushed him slightly in the shoulder. "What the heck, why didn't you tell me it was you?"
"What?" Dick repeated, "Are you okay? Did you hit your head?"
"Quit the crap," I shoved him again, but harder.
"Hey, hey, hey! What's going on over here?" Coach Stephens yelled, jogging over to us. She put a firm hand on my shoulder, which in reality would've done nothing if I truly wanted to attack Dick. Or should I say, Robin? I was extremely mad. At Dick for keeping secrets, and at myself for not noticing. But Stephens' hand on my shoulder brought me back to perspective, if only slightly.
"Nothing," I gritted my teeth as I glared at Dick. He met my eyes with a concerned confusion, though I knew it was just an act. I don't know why I trusted that insane voice in my head, but I did.
"Okay, now I don't want to see any more shoving," Stephens said. "Alright, Matthews?"
"Yes ma'am," I nodded, not losing Dick's eyes. Stephens let go of my shoulder, and I fought the urge to immediately pounce on Dick. I just followed the other girls to the locker room, filled with rage. I changed as quickly as possible, ignoring the whispers about me. I swiftly left the locker room and headed to my next period, lunch. As a part of my scholarship, I got free school lunches. And may I say, that might possibly be the best part of coming to this school. There were multiple options, such as Italian, Chinese, or just salads. I opted for salmon, and then scanned the lunchroom for Barbara. Thankfully, Dick wasn't with her yet. I speed-walked over.
"Hey Julia," Barbara smiled as I sat across from her.
"What do you know about Dick?" I asked abruptly.
"Why?" she said slowly, raising an eyebrow, "You have a crush on him or something?"
"No," I blushed. "I was just-"
I stopped mid-sentence because Dick plopped down next to Barbara. He sent her a cheesy grin, though I was sure that a flicker of caution was in his eyes.
"What, never seen a hot guy before?" Dick asked me in accordance to my silence. Not missing a beat he stood up, took me by the hand, and led me out of the cafeteria. I was too shocked that I forgot how to speak. We basically sprinted into the halls. "Look, Julia-"
"What the crap?" I snarled at him.
"I know you must be upset," Dick said slowly, his hands held up in the surrender sign, "But stay whelmed and listen."
"You listen here," I started. Dick raised an eyebrow as if to say, seriously? I just told you to be quiet.
"Like I was saying," Dick laughed slightly, maintaining his ever calm and ever light demeanor. I wanted to freak out but somehow his steady voice and joking attitude managed to cool my rage. "I couldn't tell you my secret ID. I really wanted to, but Bats would have my head if I said a word. Wally is the only one on the team who knows my ID. And it took me forever to convince Batman to let me tell him. So now that you know, you can't breathe a word about it. Don't tell the team, Barbara, and especially don't tell Batman. I will literally kill you if you do."
"I'd like to see you try," I said because I didn't know how to reply, and being sarcastic was my first instinct.
"Julia," Dick said slowly, "Please."
"I won't tell," I promised.
"Thank you," Dick grinned hugely. "Now, Barbara must be wondering where we are."
