Lan Zhan woke up, as his typical daily routine suggested, before sunrise. The fresh mountain air was cold, and he pulled Wei Ying closer, trying to keep him warm. The smaller boy mumbled something in his sleep, but did not protest – his arm reached out, and subconsciously he wrapped himself around Lan Wangji quite tightly.Lan Zhan smiled. It felt good.
The last 24 hours had been so eventful and so lucky for him that he was feeling dazed, drunk. Always insecure about himself, he took a great risk that day. He basically put his life in Wei Ying's hands, although he'd never admit to it.But it was inevitable – he simply could not go on living with all those uncertainties, and all the unanswered questions his brain had been tormenting him with. It was a leap of faith, the faith that Wei Wuxian would not reject him completely; that would have killed him.
He was lying, very still, listening to his lover's even breathing. And this was enough. He was safe, and he was keeping him warm; that was all that mattered at the time.
**
Wei Wuxian had woken as Lan Zhan moved to tuck him in and hug him. He didn't open his eyes, but he was listening intently. He knew he made Lan Zhan happy when he gave him that ridiculous octopus hug (they probably would look ridiculous to someone who would bother to watch them sleep) – he heard his heart give a little bounce, and he felt him smile. He was sure that the boy he was sprawling himself over right now could feel him too, just as well as he was feeling him – skin on naked skin, heart against a fearful heart. He was happy, although he didn't fully realize it. He felt safe, it felt good. But then his mind went to all the usual dark places, as it would... What were they to do after the hunt was over? Could he possibly tell his family about all this?
And what about the Gusu Lan Clan?
He was pretty certain that if a word of this ever came out – Lan Zhan would be punished severely. There and then, they were breaking probably half of the stupid Cloud Recesses Clan rules. A giant wave of sadness came over Wei Ying, because he knew Lan Zhan was doing it all for him. Did he really deserve this? Did he deserve such devotion? Such sacrifice? Such love?
