Chapter 28: Zeth
“I don’t think she’s turning up.” Muse says.
“Oh, come on. She’ll turn up...eventually. She’s probably gotten over death before.” Ursa stirs the orange mocktail sitting on the counter next to her. “Tonight, we are not bothering at all to try and stop Brandon from drinking. Agreed?”
“Agreed.” I say. “Don’t tell Jinx though. She’ll be stuck healing him again.” I raise my glass of cola. “Cheers everyone.”
“Cheers!” The three laugh, Brandon’s beer bottle swinging wildly.
Music rings through the room, the dance floor full of people from the city. It was never like this in Hell.
“Is Jinx ever gonna turn up?” Brandon slurs, dropping his bottle and swearing at it like it was the person that just stole his wallet.
Ursa smiles towards the door. “I think she just arrived.”
I turn around to see what she’s talking about, and, to my surprise, Jinx turned up. She wears a white flowy diagonally cut skirt with a blue dress shirt, her normal boots and a little blue bow covering her ears. She walks down the steps, seeing us and giving a little wave. She looks more gorgeous than what she does killing stuff. A swarm of boys gather around her, one of their mouths hanging open.
“Hey, I’m taken mate.” Jinx says to the one in awe. She goes over and sits down on the seat next to me, waving hello in an arc over her head. “Hullew!”
“You turned up!” Ursa calls. “I’m not alone with a bunch of boys!”
“I wouldn’t leave you here, Ursa. You’d just make me pay for it later.”
“Nice to see you’re cheerful.” I interrupt their conversation. I’ve got to kiss Jinx before Brandon can. “Can I buy you a drink?”
“Just a beer, thanks.” She adjusts her skirt.
I raise an eyebrow. “You support under aged drinking?”
“I’m not under aged. Today’s my birthday.” She rubs the back of her head.
Ursa barges through the centre of where we’re sitting. “Happy birthday Jinx!” She yells so loud that the entire club can hear. She dashes out of the club and across the street, nearly getting hit by a car.
“On a less eccentric note, happy birthday.” I say.
“Hooray! Now it’s been twelve years since my race died! Yay for death!” She shakes her hands in the air.
Ursa dashes back into the club throwing party streamers everywhere.
“I do not know this girl.” Muse says, sipping his juice. Ursa tries to slip a party hat over Jinx’s bow.
“Put that on me and your dead.” She grabs Ursa’s hand to make sure. She decides to walk over to Brandon, who was trying to sleep on the bar counter, and slip the hat onto his head. He gets startled, and nearly hits Ursa with a streak of lightning. Luckily, nobody else in the club saw.
Ursa gasps. “I love this song!” She grabs Muse’s hand and drags him to the dance floor. Poor Muse.
I stand up, and hold my hand out to Jinx. “May I have this dance?”
“We’re at a club, not a ball. And yes.” She grabs my hand and I lead her out. Out of the corner of my eye, I see Brandon following us, hiding behind people. But he’s doing a horrible job at it. We see Ursa singing the lyrics of the song, having a ball. Muse just dances, pretending he doesn’t know her. Yet he’s holding her hand.
I can’t dance. I really can’t, but she doesn’t seem to mind.
“You are a horrible dancer!” Jinx laughs. Oh. She does notice.
“Oh, but I’m good at other things.” I smirk.
“Like what, may I ask?” I take my chance, and lean in closer to her. She doesn’t hold back, but before our lips are about to touch, Brandon bursts in. He pushes me away, the party hat lopsided on his head.
“She’s my girl, mate!” He shouts. He jumps around with his fists up, like he wants to fight.
“Okay then...” I try to slowly walk away, but he won’t let me. Muse, Ursa and Jinx stand to the side, placing bets.
“Not helping guys!” I yell. Brandon tries to hit me with lightning, and this was the queue for Ursa to dive behind the bar. By the time I look back to the group, only Muse remains. Where did Jinx go?
Brandon keeps throwing bolt after bolt, the people in the crowd somehow not noticing. I wrap shadow under his feet, pulling him to the ground.
I kneel down so my face is in front of his. “I don’t want to fight you over a girl.”
The music cuts and murmurs spread through the crowd. I look to the DJ booth, the original DJ collapsed at the bottom of the stairs. Then, a voice spreads through the room. Jinx, you sneaky fox.
“You all having a good time out there?” She says. As soon as she finishes talking, the music blares. The crowd cheers and continues to dance.
Jinx laughs from the booth, clearly enjoying herself. Ursa comes out from under the bar and leaps onto the DJ booth, joining Jinx. They chat, making diagrams in the air. They nod at each other, and begin their trick.
“Everybody, clap your hands!” They yell before they back flip off the booth, clapping in beat. They use pure leg strength to continue back flipping through the crowd. After a few more flips, they flip sideways and land perfectly synchronised. People clap, and the boy from before comes through the crowd. That is when I decide to walk over.
“When did you learn that?” I say astonished.
“Air diagrams can teach you the dandiest things.” Jinx giggles.
“Hey!” Somebody yells through the crowd. “That girl! She knocked me out!” Oh, it’s the DJ Jinx knocked out.
“This is the indicator that we should go.” Jinx kicks the DJ in the groin as he runs up to punch her.
The night started off great. Then it got not so great.
