Chapter 30: Zeth
I can’t sleep, so I sit out on the window sill. The city glimmers, lights covering nearly every inch of the land. How can anyone live here? If they’re people like Brandon, I can understand their choice.
I sit there for about half an hour, just starting. I hear a rattle from behind me, and turn to see Jinx standing at the fridge, a slice of pie nearly at her mouth.
When she bites down, she sees me and freezes. She puts on a guilty smile, releases the now dinted pie and puts it back in the fridge.
“I did nothing.” She says.
I smile. “Don’t eat Brandon’s food.”
“Can I eat anything?”
“Nope.”
“Can I have anything?”
I walk over to her. “Depends what you want.”
“Is it edible?”
“No. But I think it’s better than food.”
“What could be better than food?”
I lean into her, trying to meet her eyes. “Guess.” I press my lips to hers, and she doesn’t pull back. They’re soft, like they’ve never been touched before. She wraps her arms around my neck, not letting go. I wrap my arms around her hips in reply. I’ve never really known what love is like, but-. We can both relax, now that we don’t have to fight anything. And if those times come back, we can help each other. We can help everyone. When we break apart, she smiles up at me.
“Best birthday ever.” She laughs a little. She walks back over to her hammock and flops onto it. “I still want some food though.”
I roll my eyes and chuck her a rotten apple from the fruit bowl. “Enjoy.”
“Animal cruelty.” She says, biting into it.
I jump back onto the couch, pulling the blanket I found in the cupboard over me. As I drift off, I think about how I’m going to rub it into Brandon’s face that I stole his girl.
I wake up to the others huddled around the dining room table.
“Dammit!” Muse shouts. “That was one of my best attacks!”
Brandon chuckles. “This is why I have a level 10 demon horde.” I stretch and walk over to the table, looking down at Jinx’s card deck.
She notices me behind her. “Dimension Wars.” So far Brandon and I’s alliance is working relatively well.”
Ursa places down a card, summoning a swarm of holographic stars. “Feel my fury, Amadeus!” Jinx simply deflects it with a barrier of earth. Ursa slams her cards onto her face. “Seriously?!?”
