Chapter 29: Jinx

We sprint outside, regretting on deciding Brandon should drive. He was the only one that knew how to work his motorcycle, so we kind of had no choice. How can Ursa fight in a dress? This skirt is annoying the hell out of me, and I stole the god damn thing.

We barely all fit on the bike, with Brandon at the front, then Ursa, Muse, me and Zeth on the back. It is only now that I realise our entire situation; we are running away from a DJ I knocked out on a bike that is being driven by a drunk person. Best birthday ever.

The tyres go screeching up the street, Zeth flying off the back. I grab his jacket collar, his heels skidding along the road. He looked quite comfortable.

“Hey guys! Here comes my apartment!” Brandon points to a tall brick building.

“Are we going to stop? I want to exit the ride now.” Muse has his arms gripped around Ursa, not letting go any time soon.

“Bye apartment!” Brandon waves goodbye to his home. The next second, Brandon has turned sharply and Zeth has gone flying. All that remains of him is his jacket, which I’m holding in my hand.

For some reason we go around the other side of the block to park, which is completely pointless because the entrance is on the other side of the building.

We walk through a crappy old alleyway that smells like cigarettes to get back to the front entrance. A hobo sitting next to a dumpster looks at us funny, like he’s thinking God damn high society.

“Right...Who’s going off to find Zeth?” Everyone looks to me again. I narrow my eyes. “I hate all of you.” Before I go off to find him though, I see the party hat hanging around Brandon’s chin like a wizard beard. Drunkards can be funny at times. Mostly annoying, but funny.

I find Zeth on the curb eating a cheeseburger.

“Can I have some?” I say, startling him. Zeth coughs some of it up, nearly choking.

He shakes his head. “My money, my McDonald’s.”

“I think you might need this.” I hold up his jacket. His face instantly turns happy, and drops the burger to catch it and hug it.

“Thank you.” He looks up at me. I just give a thumbs up.

“The others are waiting in the apartment. We better get back before one of them blows something up.”

As I walk in the door, I get horrified by Brandon’s bum aiming right at me. He’s slumped on the couch, party hat squashed beneath his face.

Ursa swings through one of the doorways holding a blow dryer. “He’s not dead!”

“Why do you have a hair dryer?” I ask.

“Brandon vomited on me. So I had a shower. It’s a logically human thing.”

“Where’s Muse?” Zeth says.

“Washing the vomit out of my dress.” Ursa sighs. “I liked that dress...Also, I’d suggest getting a bed organised. Brandon can stay on the couch, and Muse and I have the bedroom.”

“Wait...” Zeth tries to put two and two together, but gets nothing.

Ursa gets embarrassed. “He’s like a teddy bear.”

I roll my eyes. “Fine, stay with him. I’ll make a hammock from something.” My eyes go to the large rug on the floor. I’ve got it.

For some reason I find some rope under Brandon’s sink, and use it to hook the rug from the top of the window frame to the kitchen bench.

“Perfect!” I smile at my work.

Muse comes back from the laundry and stares at Ursa. “Where did you get the t-shirt?”

“I found it in Brandon’s room.” She shrugs. “I’m just hoping it’s clean.”She yawns. “See you in the morning guys.”

“Night Ursa.” I say. Muse follows Ursa in, hanging her dress over a chair.

Zeth looks over to me. “So...”

“You can take the hammock if you want.” I say. “I’ve slept on harder things than carpet. Which isn’t actually that hard...”

“You take it.” He smiles. “I’ll use the other couch.” I jump into the hammock, taking off my boots and bow. I take my tail out from underneath my shirt.

“Goodnight Zeth.” I smile and roll over, staring at the wall.
