Chief Casey Season 2: Balancing Work, Family and Friendships

Chapter 248

30 Minutes Later as Matt continues to work on his e-mails and Matteo plays with his toys:
Matt's POV: As I read through my e-mails, I smile when I see that the commissioner has chosen us as the house to host a firefighter from Milwaukee for the summer. Meanwhile, one of my firefighters have to go to Milwaukee to do it. Just great, can he not do this to me now? Deciding to call the commissioner, I go to call him when I hear a knock on the door. "I hope that I am not disturbing." Looking up, I saw it was my mom. "Like I said this morning mom, you are never disturbing me at work." I then got up and went to hug her. "How are you this morning?"

My mom smiled. "Good, hoping that I didn't disrupt anything this morning." I chuckled when he said that before going to lean against my desk. "Mom, I was out of the house by 7. I was literally in the midst of putting my pants on. Anyways...the babies were in the room for their morning feeding. So believe me when I say this mom, you are never disturbing me on shift day." My mom smiled when I said that. "Listen, I really am sorry that I missed last night. I thought it was tonight because you know...it's your birthday and the weekend." I nodded and understood. "It's fine."

 My mom smiled at me. "So, this is your office now." She then walked around and looked at the pictures. "You really picked that picture of me to put on your desk?" She then went to grab it and I sighed. "It's the only nice one I have. The other pictures I've had over the years are the most recent version of your prison pictures." My mom then turned to look at me. "Wow, that's like almost a decade ago now." I nodded and agreed with her. "Your fault for not sending me pictures more often." She nodded and agreed. "So, is it just you and Matteo here today?"

I shook my head. "Gabby's in my other office with the other kids. C'mon Matteo, how about we go sit out in the common room with your grandma." Matteo nodded as he got up and grabbed some of his cars. I then put my hand out and he grabbed it. Walking out, I then led my mom to my other office. "So, mom. I am not sure if you ever came to visit but these are the rooms the officers use." My mom nodded and agreed. "This office here that says Hermann?" She nodded while turning to look at it. "This was my office from when I became Lieutenant to when I left."

My mom nodded and agreed. "You like the bigger one better?" I laughed. "It's the Chief's office. You have to deal with a lot more work than you can do on that little desk. Plus, the desk isn't that comfortable. Neither is that bed. I brought my own mattress here for when I want to sleep. Gabby and the kids stay most nights." She nodded and agreed when we made it my office. Looking at Gabby, I smiled as I saw her reading on her iPad while the kids took a nap. "Mind if I go..." I nodded and agreed. "Of course mom, go see your grandkids." She smiled and nodded.

That's when Gabby looked up from her iPad. "Oh sorry, I didn't see you there Nancy. How long have you been here?" Setting her iPad down, Gabby then got up and went to hug my mom. My mom smiled as she went to hug Gabby. "It's fine. You must've gotten lost in a pretty good book." Gabby nodded and smiled. "A steamy romance novel about a firefighter and a paramedic." I laughed when she said that. "Was one of them a captain and the other the head paramedic?" She nodded and smiled. "Hm...I wonder why you like that book so much. Any similarities?"

Gabby then got up and smiled when I said that before going to kiss me softly. "You done work?" I nodded. "While my mom is here. The kids still asleep or can we bring them to the common room? I am positive that my mom wants to hold one of them." My mom nodded and agreed with me when I said that. "Both of them even. They are so adorable that I can't choose which one I want to hold." I nodded and agreed. "Well, you can hold Wally. I want my Ella." I then let go of Gabby and went to grab her from her crib. "Hi princess, ready to go sit with daddy's friends?"

She nodded while going to cuddle up to me and I smiled while kissing the top of her head. I then looked at my mom. "C'mon mom, let's go sit in the common room and we can talk with my friends." We all nodded and agreed as we walked out of my office and then made our way to ithe common room where I saw some streamers and posters on the wall. "What's this?" Everybody then turned to look at me and smiled. "Happy birthday Chief." I smiled. "Guys, we already celebrated last night." Everybody nodded when I saw Cruz and Severide come out with a firetruck cake. "Yeah, but not with a cake or food."

I laughed and agreed. "Fine." I then walked over to them and then looked at the cake. "Thanks guys, what a great surprise." That's when I saw pizza on the counter. "You even got Pizza?" Gabby then spoke up. "That was me. I was going to get it because I knew your mom was coming in." I smiled at her. "Then let's eat up everybody. My family eats first." I then smiled while walking over to the pizza.
