The Barricade in Rue De Villet, 8:52pm, June 5th, 1832
The rain had let up, as Basset called down to the men again, "Here comes a man in uniform."
Enjolras' eyes widened, "Why is he here?"
"What brings you to this place?" Basset hissed down to him.
"I come here as a volunteer!" Jacquelyn straightened up at the familiar voice.
Joly motioned for the section of barricade to be moved back, "Approach and show your face."
Jacquelyn watched as an old man in a national guard uniformed creeped through the space, hands up upon seeing all the guns trained on him.
"You wear an army uniform." Enjolras said.
The man nodded, removing his cap, "That's why they let me through."
"You've got some years behind you sir." Montparnasse, now seemingly gung ho about the cause, snarled.
"There's much that I can do."
Jacquelyn, now having properly seen his face, tried not to smirk as they moved into the center of the semi circle that had surrounded him, "Lower your guns. He's fine."
Gavroche nodded, "It's alright, I know him."
The men reluctantly lowered their rifles, but still Enjolras jerked his head toward the cafe, and toward Javert, "You see that prisoner over there?"
"A volunteer like you." Grantaire added bitterly.
Combeferre nodded, "A spy who calls himself Javert- hes gonna get it too."
Before anyone else could say anything Basset yelled, "It looks like they're getting ready to attack again!"
Immediately men rushed to climb the barricade, priming their weapons to ready for the fight.
"Take this, and use it well." Jacquelyn said, snatching up a carbine and handing it to the man, who still looked at them in confusion.
Enjolras glared at him, "But if you shoot us in the back you'll never live to tell."
"A group of slappers approaching the barricade! Troops behind them- 20 men or more!" Someone yelled.
Jacquelyn climbed the barricade, pulling their carbine with them, and looking over at all the men that were approaching.
"Steady- steady- fire!" Enjolras yelled.
The battle raged again, and this time no one had the guts to threaten to blow the barricade sky high again, the fighting instead raging around the barricade, Bahorel and Charles both fighting with there hands and bayonets to keep those of the national guard who climbed the barricade away while Jacquelyn and some others had climbed to the highest point and fired shots toward the back of the platoon.
The man carefully fired round after round, aiming for nothing but the soldiers' caps, sending them scurrying back, too distracted to fire again.
Jacquelyn hardly spared him a glance as they kicked away a man who had tried to snatch the bag of shot supplying the right side of the barricade, only freezing upon hearing Feuilly's yell of, "Jack! Sniper!"
They hardly had time to turn before someone was pulling them out of the way, another shot was fired and a man fell from one of the roofves, Enjolras shouting, "Sweep for more! Get the others!"
"The attack was a diversion!" Combeferre yelled, "Search for anyone who might've gotten in here!"
"Are you alright boy?" The man asked.
Jacquelyn nodded, "You saved my life monsieur Valjean."
"How did-" He froze.
"We've met before monsieur."
Before he could ask anymore questions, Enjolras had returned, and was taking Jacquelyn's hand to pull them back up to standing, turning to Valjean, "You saved my lover's life, monsieur."
"I'd never see an innocent soul killed." He said simply.
"For your presence of mind, for the deed you have done, I will thank you monsieur when our battle is done." Jacquelyn assured.
"Give me no thanks M'sieur," He bowed his head, "There is something you can do."
"If it is within my power..." Enjolras started.
Valjean looked over to the cafe, "Give me the spy Javert, let me take care of him."
From his place in the cafe Javert muttered, "The law is inside out, the world is upside down."
"Do what you have to do, the man belongs to you." Jacquelyn pulled the pistol from their holster, handing it to him.
He nodded in thanks, turning and moving into the cafe, leaving Jacquelyn to grip Enjolras' hand, murmuring, "Guess that takes the near death experience count up to 9 for today."
"No other national guard will be getting in here again, I swear it." He said, wrapping an arm around them.
Jacquelyn nodded, and the barricade slipped into an almost silence, until they jumped as a single shot rang out into the night, another shot, from farther off echoing the noise.
