Kahini stood by the glass wall in Sanam's living room, her reflection blending with the city lights outside. She looked effortlessly glamorous in her sparkly black, deep V-neck blazer dress, and shiny black heels, but her mind was far from the elegance she portrayed.
"Yes, I get it, Amir, but isn't this my seat? Amma gave me her shares, so why do I need to prove anything?" Kahini's voice held a sharp edge, her gaze still fixed on the glittering skyline.
She tried to calm herself, forcing her voice to soften as she listened carefully to Amir's explanation on the other end of a call. "So, I have to make a presentation about my vision for the institution."
"Okay, coordinate that. I'll take some time to research. From what I know, their focus is primarily on child abuse and HIV-positive children." As Kahini spoke, her words trailed off when she caught a glimpse of something in the glass wall—a reflection that stole her breath away.
Sanam stood behind her, looking beyond stunning in a white high-neck satin top, paired with a sleek black jacket and sparkly trousers. Kahini's heart skipped a beat. She had never seen Sanam in Western clothes before, and the sight of her made her forget the conversation she was having.
"Wow..." The word slipped from Kahini's lips unconsciously, her eyes glued to Sanam's reflection as she moved closer, standing so near that Kahini could feel her body heat radiating behind her.
Realising she was still on the phone. "Amir, I... I need to go. Let's talk on Monday. Yes, you too, have a great weekend," she stammered, barely holding herself together before hanging up.
She barely had time to catch her breath before Sanam's arms wrapped around her waist, pulling her back into her chest. The warmth of her lover's embrace sent a rush of heat coursing through Kahini, making her heart pound.
"You shouldn't look this sexy," Sanam's voice purred against her ear, the seductive tone sending a shiver down Kahini's spine. "It was easier when you wore that jacket earlier—now, I can't take my eyes off your body." The words were like fire.
Kahini's breath hitched, her body leaning instinctively into Sanam's embrace, surrendering to the moment. The soft, intoxicating scent of Sanam's perfume filled her senses, making it hard to think, let alone speak.
"You're one to talk. Have you seen yourself today?" Kahini managed to reply, her voice a little breathless.
Sanam smiled, resting her chin on Kahini's shoulder as she held her close. "I thought I'd make things easier for you guys. I don't usually wear this kind of outfit unless I have to, but I knew getting into the club would be tough if I showed up in my usual clothes."
"I love you in ethnic clothes more—you're beautiful in them. But you're right. It would've been hard to get in dressed like that." Kahini chuckled softly, she closed her eyes, savouring the warmth of Sanam's body pressed against hers, letting her worries melt away.
Sanam's heart swelled at Kahini's words. Kahini's effortless acceptance of her, without any desire to change who she was that made Sanam feel like she had found something rare and precious. Kahini didn't just love her; she cherished her, and that feeling was something Sanam never felt before.
But before the peaceful moment could last, Kahini's phone buzzed loudly, breaking the stillness between them.
"Argh... go away," Kahini growled, irritated, not wanting to leave Sanam's embrace.
"It's probably Prashant. Come on, let's go." Sanam giggled softly, releasing her hold.
Kahini turned to look at Sanam, pouting like a child. "I don't want to go," she muttered.
