Kahini settled into the plush couch in the living room, wrapping a warm shawl around her shoulders to ward off the morning chill. The sky outside was a soft grey, hinting at the cold day ahead, while a faint mist clung to the ground, creating an almost ethereal atmosphere.
"So, she's leaving tomorrow?" Prashant asked, noticing the gloom on Kahini's face.
"Yeah, we both are. I mean, I'll see her off at Delhi airport, then I have a meeting in Delhi Monday, so I'll stay till then," Kahini replied, her voice tinged with sadness.
"Hmm... and how are you feeling about it?" Prashant's tone was gentle.
Kahini sighed, her eyes reflecting a mixture of emotions. "Is that even a question?" Her face said it all—she was heartbroken about Sanam leaving.
"I mean, it's not that I don't want her to go because I know the kids are waiting for her, but I d..." She trailed off, struggling to put her feelings into words.
"Don't want her to go," Prashant completed her sentence, his voice understanding.
"Yeah. I know it's so selfish and a bad thing," Kahini admitted, her voice barely above a whisper.
"It's not. It's called love, K," Prashant said softly.
Kahini's face turned red, a mixture of embarrassment and acknowledgment. "I guess you're right."
Just then, the sound of the front door opening caught her attention. Sima entered, looking tired from her day at college. Her usual bright demeanor was replaced by a quiet, subdued presence.
"I'll talk to you later, Prashant. Sima just got home," Kahini said, giving her friend a quick goodbye before ending the call.
As she hung up, she watched Sima place her bag down and move towards the kitchen. Kahini observed her, who was pouring herself a glass of water. Kahini's heart ached with concern as she called Sima over. "Sima beta, come here."
"Yes, didi?" Sima replied, obediently as she stoop front of Kahini.
"Sit with me," Kahini said gently, patting the space next to her on the couch. "I want to talk to you."
Sima sat down, her expression confused. "Is everything okay, didi?"
Kahini took a deep breath, carefully choosing her words. "I should be the one asking you that. I've noticed you've been quieter than usual lately. Is everything okay?"
Sima hesitated, then nodded. "Yeah, everything's fine. Why, didi?"
Kahini placed a comforting hand on Sima's shoulder. "Then why is this chatterbox on mute? You know you can tell me anything, right?"
Sima's eyes flickered with emotion before she looked away, forcing a smile. "Oh, didi, it's nothing like that. It's just my exams are coming up, so I've been stressed lately."
Kahini observed Sima's expression closely. She had been noticing Sima's uncharacteristic quietness for the past few days, and had been putting thought into what might be bothering her this much. A knot of anxiety tightened in Kahini's chest. She was scared to address it directly, fearing the possibility of rejection or misunderstanding. Summoning her courage, she gently said, her voice trembling slightly, "Is it about me and Sanam?"
