I was dressed in the most decent clothing I have ever owned. My hair was neatly pushed back and my whole demeanor had changed just for this one day. My teachers are meeting my family so I need to make a good impression even if it's for a little while. I don't want any complains.
Emerging out of my room felt like a mission. My knees were slightly wobbly and my palms were sweaty. I would not have been this scared if I didn't hear the other students talking about how teachers roast the students during these meetings. And considering this is my first time having a formal event like a parent teacher meeting, I have all right to be nervous.
"We ready?" Papa John asked from the driver's seat.
"Yes." My voice came out squeaky. Joanna turned around and giggled softly which made papa John smile, obviously. They are so in love. Anytime Jo-Jo smiles, papa John has this satisfied look on his face. Like he won a billion dollar lottery.
"You know baby, when your papa John was young, say he was 19 and his parents were called in the college, he looked so scared. He came to see us that day in the morning because he couldn't stop feeling, 'these weird hands clenching his stomach', and he looked like he could piss himself any moment." Joanna recalled.
"You meant elephants in the stomach right?" I cleared with a hint of amusement.
"Yes. That's what it was. I was nervous because, well, there were girls who wouldn't leave my side and I didn't want any of them to come at me in front of my parents." Pap John defended himself. Joanna and I scoffed together.
"It was because you decided that it would be fun to pour heaps of super glue to your teacher's chair. And then spread rumours that he was gay because he would stare at you."
"He really did that?" I began crackling up.
"I did. But it's not like I'm ashamed. I'm quite proud of it. I will have more stories to tell my kids and grandkids. Like you get to know all the stories." He raised his chin a little higher.
I smiled at both of them and sat back, feeling much more better about this than ever. When we reached the college gates, I directed papa John to the parking area where I usually park my own car and we three got down. We had to visit each teacher individually so I first took them to my English professor.
"Welcome Mr and Mrs Mickelson. How are you both doing?" The teacher asked politely. She was an old lady with a great command in the English language.
"We are both doing great. How are you?" Joanna asked back clutching her belly. Maybe the baby is kicking.
"I'm doing good. Thank you for asking. Now about Ava," I held my breath and waited for her to get it over with. "She is a brilliant student. I like her essays and her input in the class. Though I have to get it out of her she doesn't take the initiative to speak, which is considered a big setback because this girl has a very good opinion and thinking about everything. I like to get her views on things because it's unique than that of the others."
Of course they are, being a supernatural and having gone through the things that I got through, makes a person stronger. Makes them into someone who can have better thinking, strange opinions and a creative writing.
"I apologize for her not speaking, but you see my daughter was always homeschooled. This was her first year in an actual college so she is a little shy and anxious. She isn't one to draw too much attention to herself. She would do anything to avoid it." Papa John explained the teacher while pulling me to his side.
I thought the teacher would be offended that papa John was defending me but she just smiled and said, "very well then. I hope you overcome it Ava. I want to see you achieving great things. I expect that from all of my students and you are no different."
