chanhee stared at his reflection in the mirror, wiping away at his own face, his hands trembling as he continued wiping. again and again, he furiously rubbed at the nonexistent makeup, his cheeks heating up as the cotton pad had started to disintegrate between his fingers.

before he could rub enough to cause scratches, someone had grabbed his hand, their tight grip on it causing chanhee to flinch but nevertheless turn to face whomever it was that decided to interrupt him.

her beautifully painted eyes narrowed with her perfectly pink lips pursed in an emotion chanhee couldn't be bothered to decipher. his mother held his face between her hands, her cold hands sending chills down his spine as she attempted to soothe the burning chanhee felt after his attempt to practically erase all his features that were so lovingly passed down from his parents onto him.

"why're you harming the face that provides for you?" she said, ignoring chanhee's glares and his attempts to break free from her tight grasp on his face, accidentally leaving scratches on him. "now see, because of your actions, i'm causing damage to your face on accident!"

"i don't care." his mother frowned at his response, gently taking out her bag of makeup products and slowly putting on her son's makeup. "does dad know you're doing this?" chanhee asked, still glaring at her as she dabbed on some foundation on him.

she shrugged, still too focused on making sure that her son looked as pretty as he could be for the cameras later.

chanhee wanted so badly to run away, to no longer be seated there and treated like an object for display but he knew he couldn't — he had to sit still and let his mother do as she pleases because if he didn't, the wicked witch would have her way with the lives of his friends and just that thought alone was unbearable. and besides, when he weighed his life against that of his friends who had pursued something they loved, it wasn't that difficult to choose which mattered more.

"you must really care for those friends you've made to so easily agree to my terms when i put them on the line," his mother said with a faint smile as she slowly put on eyeshadow for chanhee.

"you blackmailed your son. is that something to be proud of?" he saw her grip on the brush tighten before she released a sigh, a thin lipped smile forming on her face.

"watch the attitude chanhee. you're lucky that i'm the one who caught you first rather than your father — god knows what he would do to you. you're better off under my care than his," she remarked, pressing a bit too harshly on his cheeks and then remembering that his face was an asset she shouldn't harm.

chanhee blinked at her response. neither she nor his father seemed like a good option, with them waving their money around and weaponizing it against their enemies and each other. their relationship was built off of money, greed and excessive pride, all of which chanhee didn't see as important in a relationship.

his mind couldn't help but wander towards sunwoo. what was he doing now? had he eaten? was he feeling okay? he wanted to send him a message, even if it was a simple hello or to tell him he'd be busy that day but he couldn't (his mother had taken his phone away).

in his heart and mind, he knew that the relationship he sought after was the one he had with sunwoo, wishing that in that instance, he could just be in his arms or back in the arcade playing mindless games with him again. he wished he could be walking down roads with him, watching seonmi in the distance skipping along and greeting people merrily with his hand and sunwoos' intertwined. he wished that he could be on a long bus ride once more where sunwoo would offer him his shoulder to lean on, remaining still for the entirety of the ride to ensure that chanhee wouldn't accidentally fall.

and he wished that he could see another stupid 1v1 message from the boy.

but as his mother finished putting on his makeup, he was immediately rushed over to get changed, leaving no time for him to continue thinking about the person that made him the happiest.
