"thanks for being so kind to my sister," sunwoo said, carrying the sleeping seonmi on his back.
although he knew he had a million things to do, eating dinner with none other than choi chanhee was a breather from his hectic lifestyle and for once, his sister was able to eat more than just packaged or instant food and he had chanhee to thank for that.
"i'll pay you back eventually for the food," sunwoo said.
"it's really no big deal after what you've done for me," chanhee replied, glancing at sunwoo who was looking at the ground. "can i ask why you're so hesitant to let me help you?"
sunwoo shook his head. "i just don't like being in debt. and, are you going to follow me all the way back home?" chanhee slowly nodded, sunwoo stopping dead in his tracks at his response. "don't."
his mind started going into overdrive, thinking of all the different things that chanhee would think of him if he were to see the state of the house he lived in. would he start thinking less of him? would he start pitying him? or would he start thinking that he was nothing more than a gold digger? all those thoughts made him feel increasingly anxious, the image he had formed of himself slowly crumbling into pieces.
sunwoo instinctively distanced himself from chanhee, expecting the older boy to not notice but instead, chanhee stared at him and stopped walking as well. "why're you so interested in my life anyways? i already said it's nothing much."
"am i being intrusive?" chanhee asked and a part of sunwoo wanted to shake his head and say no.
but instead, he nodded, seonmi slightly shifting in her sleep. "you're being intrusive. i've never even shown hyunjun where i lived and i've been best friends with him for so long so why would i show you my house when we aren't even close? just because i helped you out a bit doesn't make us friends or anything like that."
sunwoo didn't mean it. he knew he didn't mean it yet he couldn't stop the words from falling out of his mouth.
"oh, i-i'm sorry then. i'll just get a taxi and head home. i...i never intended to make you feel uncomfortable," chanhee muttered, his grip on the bag of gaming equipment tightening as he stood before sunwoo. "i guess, i assumed things when i shouldn't have."
he wanted to apologise immediately, tell him that in actuality, he was just scared of chanhee viewing him differently because others had done the same. but instead, his feet stayed rooted to the ground, paralysed in his place with no words coming out of his mouth as chanhee slightly nodded and tried to smile at him, waving goodbye and dragging the bag behind him.
he stayed that way until chanhee was completely out of sight, a heavy feeling weighing on his chest because of the words he couldn't bring himself to say.
