Tw// mentions of abuse

"So" Gina sat down on her bed getting herself comfortable "tell me about your date. You didn't call me asking me to get you out of it so I assume it went pretty well"

"Not a date" Nini corrected "but it was surprisingly really good. I was really scared that he'd push me to talk but he didn't.He told me a lot about himself and I learned about how he is as a person, not what everyone says about him. And he didn't expect me to open up to him even though he was opening up to me." Nini smiled thinking back on the previous night, and Gina smiled knowing that Ricky actually took her advice.

"Awwnn I love that for you. What movie did you guys even see?" Gina asked. She knew they were supposed to be going to see a movie but wasn't sure on which one.

"About that" Nini laughed "we didn't exactly get to the movie. We pulled into and in n out parking lot and—"

"NINI DID YOU—"

"Gi what?" She laughed "No! If you let me finish you would've heard me say that we pulled into the in n out parking lot and just talked all night. We even got burgers since both of us were hungry."

"Oh— my bad, we'll, I'm so happy for you Nini. It seems like he really likes you." Gina told the girl sitting in front of her.

Ricky was making all the right moves when it came to Nini and they didn't go unnoticed by Gina or Nini.

"I hope so Gi. I mean he made me genuinely smile so many times within those few hours. And I can actually talk to him, but we both know if my mom was here..." Nini trailed off kinda throwing the mood of the conversation off

"Well good thing she isn't." Gina said before taking a deep breath "Neens you have to get her out her head and stop letting her have so much control over you. She's out of your life now and you're still looking for her approval."

"I just—how am I supposed to just let her disappear from my memories when I have all these scars covering my body? They're like a daily reminder saying, hey! you were abused. And everytime I close my eyes to try to go to sleep, she's there."

"Maybe you should try talking to your therapist about it? I'm sure she's has a bunch of cases similar and knows how to fix it"

"I mean—I've been becoming more and more comfortable with her but I just don't think I'm at that point yet."

"That's understandable. There's no rush. Talk to her when you're ready but you have to remember how much of a beautiful, amazing person you are despite what your mother said to you. Don't let her words linger in your head. Okay?" Gina said and Nini let a small smile spread across her lips before Gina brought her in for a hug

"So like, there are a bunch of ingredients for making cookies down there just waiting to be used. You in?"Gina asked

"Who says no to cookies? Come on" Nini said as she followed Gina into the kitchen to start making chocolate cookies

Gina knew exactly how to get Nini's mind off of her mom and Nini appreciated her more than she could express. She honestly didn't know how she would've gotten through everything without Gina by her side through it all.

"Hi Nini" Doctor Evans greeted the brunette girl as she took a seat on her couch.

"Hi doctor evans" Nini said quietly taking a seat on the couch

"How have you been Nini? Anything changed since we last talked?"

"Not really" Nini shrugged "I've been getting close to someone" she said almost at a whisper but it was loud enough for Doctor Evans to understand

"Do you wanna tell me about that someone?" Doctor Evans asked and Nini shook her head

"I'm not ready yet" Nini said quietly

"And that's completely understandable. I'm here when you're ready to talk. Okay Nini?" She said and Nini nodded appreciative that Doctor Evans wouldn't force her to talk before she's ready

"Can I uh—can I hear another one of your stories?" Nini asked. It seemed that along with every story that Doctor Evans told the more comfortable Nini became with her.

The progress was small but it was there and Doctor Evans took note of it.

"Sure Nini, what story would you like to hear?"

"Anything" Nini said before Doctor Evans went into another childhood story that Nini enjoyed hearing.

"Doctor Evans!" Lisa approached her as she did after every session that Nini had "anything you can tell me?" She asked hopeful

"We honestly didn't discuss much today but I do have a suggestion." Doctor Evans said

"Yes! I love suggestions what is it?" Lisa asked hopeful that it'd help her at least have a little chance of having a relationship with Nini

"I think you should put her in a team sport. Maybe check with her school to see if there are any tryouts coming up? I really think it'd be good for her"

"Really? A team sport? You think that would help?" Lisa asked somewhat unconvinced and Doctor Evans laughed slightly

"I know it sounds a little weird but I really do think it'll help. It'll help her get to know a few more of her peers and help her social skills. When playing a team sport you're kinda forced to work together or everything will fail."

"Okay, I'll call her school later. I'm honestly willing to try anything. She's been in the house with me and Jorge for months and it seems like there's no progress"

"It'll happen for you guys. Don't worry. Sometimes in cases like this it's hard for the child to become comfortable with adults because of how they were treated by their past parental figure. Try not to take it personally"

"I will, thanks Doctor Evans" Lisa said before heading out the door.
