Nini stood in her bedroom mirror that had been cracked the night before. Her mother took all her anger out on her as usual, and knocked the mirror over.

Among its impact onto the floor it cracked and a few pieces of glass flew out, one cutting Nini's leg deeply, but as usual she found a way to make Nini getting hurt Nini's fault.

As Nini looked in the mirror she examined the cut that she had on her leg giving her instant flashbacks of the night before.

Nini shook her head dismissing the thoughts and heading downstairs. She hoped her mom hadn't had any alcohol that morning.

When she didn't have alcohol, she was more controlling of her actions and was less likely to hit her. Before she had alcohol she was actually...loving.

Those moments were few and far in between though. It was like she always had alcohol in her system rarely giving Nini a break.

"Hey mom, is there um anything to eat?" Nini said nervously fidgeting with her fingers avoiding eye contact

"For you? No. You can eat something at school. They give healthy food anyway, and you definitely need to lose some weight" her mother said answering her question of whether or not she'd had alcohol already.

Although Nini knew it was the alcohol talking the words still cut like a knife. She felt tears brim her eyes and tried her best not to let them fall

"Umm why are you still standing here?" She asked and Nini turned around walking back up to her room silently.

She got her books together so that she can leave. The sooner she got out the house and away from her mom the better, even if that was just a couple of hours for school.

Nini headed down the stairs and was about to leave out the door when her mother roughly grabbed her wrists causing her to wince in pain

"You were just gonna leave without saying goodbye?" Her mother said with and evil look in her eyes

"Ouch! You're hurting me!"

"And you think I care!?!" She said tightening her grip on Nini's wrists, a bruise starting to form

"I-I'm S-sorry. I uh I was in a rush." She said before her mother slapped her across her face causing her face to turn bright red.

"That's a lie! School doesn't start for another 45 minutes! So I raised a daughter who's fat and a liar. Maybe I shouldn't have had kids" her mother spat instantly causing tears to dole down Nini's face. Those words hurt her badly whether her mother meant them or not. They still hurt

"You're such a disappointment Nina" her mother said before walking off taking another swig of the bottle that sat on the kitchen table

"Oh and don't forget to come home right after school" her mother slurred and Nini quickly exited the house thankful to get away from her.

As she walked down the street in order to get to the school her mother's words continued to echo in her head. No matter how many times she attempted to dismiss the thoughts, they kept coming back.

She was never enough. Even when she didn't do anything bad, she wasn't enough

She entered the school building with her head down and proceeded straight to the girls bathroom.

She pulled out the foundation that she kept in her bag, for times like this. She needed to cover up the red mark that her mother left on her face from scratching her

The bruise she received earlier on her wrist could easily be covered with the hoodie that she kept with her.

She needed to use the makeup too much for her liking. It seemed like everyday she was getting a new scar, bruise, or scratch.

She at herself in the mirror as more tears began to fall wondering how she allowed this to continue happening to her.

The truth was, she didn't want to lose her mom. The person who was supposed to love and cherish her most in the world.

Her mom wasn't always like this. She used to treat Nini with nothing but love and affection. That is before she got addicted to alcohol. Nini still has hope that she'd get back the mother that she used to have. That somehow they'd find a way to be close again.

Nini wiped the tears away from her eyes before heading to her locker to put her books away

"Hey Nini" Gina smiled approaching her best friends locker

"Oh-hey Gi" Nini spoke, a fake smile plastered across her face

"So I was thinking After' school today—" Gina started excitedly hoping her and her best friend could finally do something outside of school but she was quickly cut off by Nini

"I can't— I have some stuff at home to take care of" Nini said earning a frown from Gina. She looked at her best friend with an apologetic smile before turning around to head off to her class.

"Nini wait" gina said gently grabbing her wrist. The one her mother hurt just that morning. Nini winced in pain earning a confused look from gina.

Gina slowly rolled up the sleeve of her hoodie seeing the deep bruise that had formed on Nini's wrist.

At the site of that gina grabbed Nini's arm and pulled her into the janitors closet

"What happened!?!" Gina asked looking at Nini with anger and concerned. She was angry that someone would ever do that to her best friend who wouldn't even hurt a fly

Nini parted her lips to say something but she was quickly cut off by Gina

"And don't even think about lying to me Nini. What really happened" she said and Nini took a breath telling her the truth.

"Oh my god Nini. You can't stay in that house with her. She seriously hurt you"

"No no no, Gi. I'll be okay" Nini said hoping her words were actually true

"Nini that house isn't safe."

"I just—I can't leave" Nini said before the bell rang "I have to get to class. If I'm late and my mom finds out it won't be a very huge night" Nini said before leaving the closet and Gina stood there worried about her best friend
